wheel tax question

Our county is talking about installing a wheel tax now I'm wondering if it would be fair to include an Amish buggy .now if that happens should it be a wheel tax or hoof tax ?

A wheel tax should also include bicycles and every other "recreational" apparatus that uses public roads.

Apply an annual $2.50/wheel county wheel tax on all vehicles that use public roads? If that includes tractors, combines, wagons and implements, that tax could get expensive fast.

Don't say that too loud, because many people would say that is a fair way to pay for expensive, but little used rural gravel roads.

If money goes where it is needed is one thing, but that never happens. Maybe next.....a shoe tax? lol...sshhhhh.

It depends an your counties situation. In this area residential home values are down to what they were 15, 20 years ago while farms values have jumped 500 percent in that time. Farmers cried bloody murder when their portion of property taxes increased with market values and got tax relief. Wheel taxes are used by counties to reduce property taxes for businesses and farms and shift some of the burden to back to residential home owners.

My thoughts are a little different Just charge a county fee (say $50 per car) when you licence it. Kind of like one town years ago was taxing lawn mowers and small items Trying to find the value and who had what was a mess. So they added a category to property tax. Same for a paved driveway in the end they just value it at like $1000 and apply the tax rate. (Eliminates all the measuring and condition etc.)

Here in Branch County we have had to turn some roads heavily used by the Amish back to gravel. The carbide shoes and heavily loaded steel wheeled wagons tore up the pavement so badly that maintenance cost was prohibitive, so back to gravel. Of course they pay no license fees, very little gas tax, etc. that fund road maintenance.
