'64 Scout - Maybe Allan in NE needs it to chase horses?

Just saw on Craigslist there's a 1964 IH Scout being sold by sealed bids by Fairfield Volunteer Fire Dept. Nice little truck, only 10200 miles. Wish I could afford to bid...
64 Scout

Boy does that bring back memories. We had one in the mid 60's. In February of 1967 we had a barn fire. Dad was at work, I was 11 at the time. We had a John Deere 50 backed up to the barn that winter. The neighbors came down to help, and asked if I could drive the Scout. I had always had trouble shifting the two stick 4 wheel drive. That time it slipped right into low range and 4 wheel drive. Backed the Scout up toward the JD, as the neighbor was sorta tossing the chain slip hook into the frame of the tractor because of the heat. Finally it hooked and he hollered to take off. Scout was on ice, and just spun. Backed up and hit it hard and pulled the tractor away from the barn. I still remember seeing the upper part of the barn end burning above the tractor in the rear view mirror. Rear tires were smoking on the tractor, but there wasn't really any damage. Sorry this was so long, but that Scout in the picture sure brought back the memories. I too would sure like to have it.

In about 1974, local fire department had a '52 GMC up for bids- paint you could see your face in, 20K miles, all the fire stuff stripped off and 20 feet of frame rails behind the cab. Had a 303 Jimmy engine. Perfect hay truck. I bid $128, some other guy bid $150 and got it.

He lived a couple of miles from me. He got it home, parked it in the field. It never moved for 25 years, until he died. I'm sure his heirs scrapped it. Grrrrr. . .

Terry where in mid Tennessee I am in mid Tennessee Beginning to think we need to have a get together for this area, All of sudden whole bunch showing up in middle Tennessee. I have 5 scouts.

Nice! My dad had one just like it. He had three all together over the years. I also owned two. Owned a lot of 4wheel drives in my day and the scouts had by far the best traction. Brings back some good memories. I learned how to drive on that that same scout.

Ray something like that is all over the board, but one thing that really is against it is the northern location. Ones from out in Arizona or west generally have less rust. I bough a real nice 62 with 42 thousand original miles in Alabama last year for $ 2800.oo private sale. At auction like this no telling. MOST true scout collectors want the scout II if they are going to drive it any. Will attach a photo of my best one. I have about 7 or 8 with 5 of them being runners. This orange 79 I was about 5 years building and no telling how much money I have in it but turned out pretty ice.

Never seen that Scout. Right in my backyard, about 15 miles away. Aw man now ya got me thinking. And it gets bad when I think to much. Did I say my Dad had one about the same year.

Oh honey, oh dear...

No kidding? I'm over by Moscow, about a mile south of US 12, so it's 45 minutes or so for me.

I'm sorely tempted to bid, though I know I shouldn't.

Wonder if they were the original owner. Trouble with fire departments is low mileage and high (really high sometimes) hours. With the Scout it's a toss up. I can't see how it could have been used all that hard, yet, volunteers can put some rough usage on a vehicle. The picture looks great, and if it was kept inside all it's life, rust shouldn't be an issue on it. The lettering doesn't look all that old, so there is the possibility of a repaint. If I had money and wanted one this would be the hardest decision ever!

We have a 1978 Chevy C65 with a PTO pump that carries 2000 gallons of water. Bought it new, only 12,000 miles and looks like a low mileage truck, inside and out. Bet it's got a million hours on that engine though, sitting, pumping water at 2500 to 3000 rpm's.
