1966 Ford F700

Hi guys I know this isn't a tractor question, but I haul grain on my farm with a 1966 Ford F-700 Grain truck. It is a V-8 gas motor and that is all I know about it. If I want to order an engine rebuild kit I need to know what motor is in it. The guy I bought it from said it was a 1966. I don't want to go for sure off of that either. Is there any where I can look up a vin number or serial number or something. Thanks for your help.
 
Yes, vin info will be helpful, but engines can be changed over that many years. If orig engine, it will be a ford FH, and most likely a 330. But there were 3 330 engines, a light duty, medium duty, and a heavy duty. It could've been changed out for a bigger 361, or a 391, also a ford FE could've been put in, anywhere from a 332 to a 428. in most cases it needs to be town down to find out just what you do have.
 
I think you have an FT motor. I would guess either a 361 or 391 cubic inch. Cousin to the FE motors, 360, 390, 427, 428.
 
Ordering an engine rebuild kit before tearing the engine down is... Well, how do you know what size bearings, rings, pistons to order until everything is measured, and machined?

Get the engine out, tear it down, make sure it is rebuildable. Then you can measure the bore and stroke, check numbers, know for sure what it is, what it needs, and buy what you need.
 
If the driver's door is original, there should be a tag on it with the vin. Or get it off your title. Post it or email me with it. I have an old Ford pamphlet that decodes the vin and tells what engine it left the factory with. The engine code is the 4th character in the vin. 5th one is the assembly plant.
 
There were a boat load of Ford FT engines, and if its been swapped it could easily be an FE engine.


The FTs were 330, 331, 352(?), 361, 391 and some others I am sure.

The FEs are 330, 352, 360, 390 and 429 and probably a few others.
 
I have 2 Fords of that age on the place. An old F-350 1 ton and then a Super duty tandem axle job and boy oh boy does it have a big engine in it. Was told it has a 534 cubic inch engine in it and twin stick shifter
 
I don't think an FE will work in a medium duty truck because the crank snout is different and the truck balancer will not work on it. The FE and FT cranks are different. Also the 429 isn't an Fe. It's a 385 series. The 410 Merc, 427 and 428 are FE's. I have a truck with a 534, has lots of low end torque. That series also had a 401 and a 477.
 
Thought the 410 Mercs were MEL's? 352 is a FE engine. We had a '75 Ford 1/2 ton with a 360 in it (FT) it spun a rod bearing, we accumulated a bunch of FE parts trying to put it back together cheap, that didn't work so it got an overbored 428 with the 360 heads on it and a 352 intake manifold (it was the only 4 barrel manifold we had in the pile) Proceeded to take out the transmission, then the transfer case, I broke a front axle in it about 2 weeks before I headed off to OTS, it was gone when I made it home.
 

You most likely have the Heavy Duty "Truck engine" version of the FE engines..
They were known as : 331, 361, 391.

The MAIN differences are in the Intake/Heads have different heating passages, so the Intakes must match the Heads..a 390 Head will not match to a 391 Intake manifold, etc.
But...you Can change the entire Top End (Heads/Intake) and use either on the short block..
Renew the guides and grind the valves.
Nodular Iron Rings are durable and won't shatter with pre-ignition..
Properly built, these engines can be very Stout..

Have been down that road, trying to replace a FT with a FE. Not only is the car(FE) crank snout too small to fit the FT damper and pully's, but the flywheel balance is different between FE and FT.

Put a 391 truck flywheel on a 390 and it will vibrate your teeth out :(
 
Take the vin number to a Ford dealer.. The parts guy should be able to tell from that number.. I sold all my Ford F- model service manuals .. It was listed there.. I had a 330 H.D. in my F-600.. as per the manual..
