OT Taxes Filed only to Find out...

Our tax lady called us and told us when she went to file our taxes electronically it was rejected. Some one stole one of our SS numbers and use it to file before we did . Having to submit copies of our SS cards and drivers license.
 
All this electronic stuff is great, you know. It's the only way to go.
My fed taxes mailed Fri. still haven't arrived. State sent Mon. has arrived.

I am unable to comment in a manner that wouldn't get erased. Crappy govt dollars at work, even crappier scrutiny of our dollars being spent.

This is what is going on here.

As part of its ongoing efforts to detect and prevent fraud, the South Carolina Department of Revenue has implemented enhanced measures including the conversion of some direct deposit refunds to paper checks. The targeted conversion of some refunds began last week. Affected taxpayers may expect to receive the paper check refund along with a letter of explanation from the South Carolina Department of Revenue. If a taxpayer receives a paper check refund but has not yet filed a state tax return, do not cash the check but instead call the South Carolina Department of Revenue at 803-898-7638. The Department apologizes for any inconvenience resulting from this action and emphasizes that its systems remain secure.
 
Expect a very long turn around in some cases on those refunds. Michigan is estimating 10-12 month turn around time on paper filed returns after the fraud is discovered. Don't know how long the IRS is going to take but have heard they will watch your return for the next few years. Honestly? This really sux. No other way to say it.
 
Geez, that stinks!! Hope it turns out ok for you and your wife.

Seems like they ought to have some system to "freeze" stolen SS numbers and assign a person a new one.
 
I have my original SS card issued in 1962.
Says right on the card--in plain English--- "cannot be used for identity!" !
Over the years, I have had to use it for identity many times!
 
There have been cases where hundreds of fake refund checks worth millions of dollars have been mailed to one address, even in other countries, from our country.

I would think that the computer software would be smart enough to flag these somehow.
 
The IRS will be giving us a PIN number for the next 3-4 years now our tax lady said. Yes this really stinks.

Same here in Ohio, but had to take the state tax quiz before they would process the return further. I understand they are randomly picking one out of ten filed returns and those that are "funny" looking. You have to get 3 of the 4 correct. Both wife and I had to do it since we file a joint return. Got the refund about a week and a half after doing the quizzes. The original return was done on the state tax site. A lady I work with failed the quiz twice and had to call where they gave her a verbal that she passed. Kind of a pain but I understand the need for it. Too many crooks out there.
 

Just how secure can you make your SS number.In the US military what used to be your serial # is now your SS #.In the military every piece paper with your name on it will include your SS #.It's out there for all to see.
 
I retired 4 years ago from our City utilities. Going thru some old files about 7 / 8 years ago, I found the huge file on water / waste-water operator training, where we had collected many years worth of SS numbers. We had hundreds of numbers, names, addresses. I was shocked. We secure-shrededed every bit of it. Later I found a second file, same thing.
I'm sure this info is sittiing out there in old file cabinets all over the country.
