One shot, one kill

2 evenings in a row I was greeted during evening feed rounds by a raccoon, actually it kind of showed its disdain for me by slowing climbing the interior wall and into the loft. Wretched creatures. It had been a mostly coon-free winter.
Tonight I reminded myself to take something with a little less fire power than what I'm inclined to carry (and less destructive if I miss) and sure enough, up the wall we go. Too much electric on the wall to shoot so up the steps to the almost empty loft I follow. About 40 feet in I hit it with 1000 lumens and it sits sooo pretty...followed by a single round of my precious .22 lr. Fell over with barely a twitch. My grandfather's single-shot Winchester took care of this as efficiently as it did when I watched him plink groundhogs as a very young boy.

I have a Winchester model 67 single shot .22. It's been in the family as long as I can remember. (I'm 59)

Nice little gun, simple and reliable.

Your shooting in a loft what are you using for ammo that won't go through walls or roof? When I shoot inside barn use a CB short. I watched my dad take a lot of groundhogs with a Wards .22 cal. rifle using soft tip lead bullets which he would cut an x on the tip of bullet. Back then you didn't see hollow points and when they did come out with hollow points but dad still used the soft lead with an x cut in it .

I have never seen a Winchester model 67. My uncle had a Winchester model 52 that was a nice shooting rifle. The only single shot .22 cal. I have is a BSA Martini in a falling block actiom.

I have a model 67 that I bought in the early sixties when I was about 10. I paid $20.00 for it and it still shoots as good today as it did then. But the bullets are way more expensive now. Must be better quality. And a 10 year old could buy them with no problem as long as he had the 50 cents for a box of 50. Sid

Two summers ago, I shot 13 coons out of the loft in my barn, using my Grandpas Marlin.

Didn't put any holes in anything (except the coons), didn't miss...still a nice accurate rifle.

I will say I made an allowance for my trifocal eyes a few years ago with a fixed 4x scope, couldn't see the front sight, rear sight and what I was shooting at all at the same time anymore.

I had the problem because I kept feed in a gravity bed wagon, 3 tons at a whack, finally made a cover out of 2x4's and steel siding, use a boat winch and a couple pulleys to lift it off, no more free food, no more coons.

When I shoot unwanted varmints in my drive, and front yard, I use .22 short hollow points. I have an old Savage single shot that I keep right inside my door. Works for me.

.22 cal. shells are hard to find in my area[swIa} but then I havent looked for a while. Where do you guys get yours and what are they costing now? Last time I checked Walyworld did not have them.

Hi, I got a cooey 22 single shot 1957 new
$12 my bro bought it for my b/day.
Shorts 50 cents for box of 50. I still have it

Been getting Remington hollow points in a brick (525 rds) at Dicks for around $25 including tax. Never see any at wally world.

When I shoot an animal inside a building I wait till the shot is backed up by a rafter or heavy beam. I get an itchy trigger finger until I have the right opportunity but it avoids making holes in the roof. Sometimes I lose the opportunity and it gets away but that's the way it goes. Can't get em all.

Dad has an old Winchester single shot .22 his mother in law used to use to shoot gophers in North Dakota. It was a straight shooting little rifle. Dad was using it to shoot gophers here on the farm one day and after a little shooting session he came back to the pickup disgusted with himself. He only got three out of the four gophers he shot at. He always had it behind the seat uncased and ready to go which reminds me, I should look in his farm van to see if it's still there.

We occasionally get coons and in the summer black snakes in our chicken house. I use a .22 pistol with bird/snake shot.

Seems to work just fine as I've had no complaints:)

Supply has gotten better the last 3 months, even see shirts now again. Local Runnings has gas some or & s on the shelf for a week steady. Used to be you only saw some for an hour on the shelf every few weeks.....

Hi I just acquired a cooey 64 10 shot. i guess mine is the one they called the "jam o matic" round here in Canada that had the plastic magazine. I got mine in trade for a small tractor part that was in stock for years and not needed. Guy thought he was getting one over on me with it not working right.
I watched a you-tube gunsmith video on it. to get in working half right, then found all the update info for the mag and receiver there to.
I got to fit that kit still. The guy was mad when he found out he pretty well gave me his child hood first gun, thinking it was junk and he had the better deal with the part!
Sometimes retired cops aren't that smart L.O.L

Encountered one mid day in the middle of a dirt road that wanted to fight my Chevy 3/4 ton pickup. Stood straight up in middle of the road snarling. Ran him over and backed over him again for good measure. Rabies I think.

Just remembered, a couple months ago our dogs alerted and wanted out of the house. It was o-dark-30. Off they went and I heard the angry growling and though coon. Then I heard a high pitched scream like a dying rabbit makes. I'd never heard the scream before by a coon.

Next morning I Googled raccoon sounds and sure enough, they have a high pitched scream. Big dog got him and there was one less to bother my sweet corn this summer.

Inside the barn shooter was a RG24 pistol with the shot shells, outside was usually whatever .22 was on sale and toward end that was the Blazer hollowpoints. Most accurate was some standard velocity solid bullet sort of target pistol loads. Sister uses Ruger single 6 worn on belt for morning chores, go to feed chickens and shoot a rat about once a week. Scared off potential robbers couple years back- thieves drive in asking for directions and rob whoever is on farm by threatening them to disclose where money, etc is or break in to rob whatever is quick to find, see armed farm lady and drive off to easier victim. 2 days after checking out sisters place hit another farm, threatened old guy with knife and didn't see relative in barn trying for racoon with a .22 mag that does a decent job on van tires AFTER head shot on robber. Sheriff got to question the 2 survivors, find out other victims and attempts.
.22 short hollow points in pump rifle good for some outside close to barn and chicken house varmint control. Ruger 10/22 and Marlin M60s don't handle shorts, pumps and lever actions usually do good repeating with the shorts. RN

I bought some Remington 500 round bricks from Dicks for $24.95 a brick ( 3 months ago). Just after Christmas I bought Remington gold hollow tip 325 round box for $11.00 a box at WalMart. I have been able to get 50 round box of Speer.22 mags hollow points for $ 18.99 at a local gun shop. Any time I am going some place and I know I'am going past a place that sells ammo I stop in . I have found ammo in places that you would think they would not have any ammo. So it pays to check.

I know the Ruger 10-22 and marlin 60 won't handel shorts. I have an old Remington model 550-1 semi auto that will fire longs, long rifle and .2 2shorts. I think Remington still makes a .22 semi auto that will shot shorts.

I have one of the very early model 67s that my father bought new in his late teens or early 20s. It does not get used much anymore, but sure has accounted for a lot of squirrels and rabbits over the years and is a prized possession. Note, I will be 67 next month.

This was a post that I certainly took a Loooong pause before I hit "Submit"...having seen how things can degrade into PETA sessions.
Very happy that the most meaningful thing to me-using my Grandfather's rifle, was picked up and ran with! However, now that I put my glasses on and looked closer- it was his Springfield 120A. Single shot, bolt action (where you have to pull back to cock the knurled end of the bolt).
FYI- though I have ventilated the walls in the past, on occasion, I just re-sided the barn with 1 inch rough cut Poplar and feel pretty confident that it will handle the .22.
Really enjoyed the conversations!

I ran into an incoming supply in my local hardware last week. CCI long rifles $7.99 per 100 rd box. Limit 2 boxes.

I have a Marlin-Glenfield 10 shot tube mag that'll only shoot LR's. Had it for over 30 years and it cost either $29 or $39,can't remember. It had an elcheapo scope on it.
