John Deere 4430 heat gauge barely comes up

I have a 4430 and am noticing that the heat gauge barely comes up after it has run for awhile. I used it this summer baling and the gauge came up about quarter of the way it was about 25 degrees C or 77 degress F. I have been running this winter with temperature around freezing, and have put a card board piece in front of the radiator and it barley moves up. Please help

You've got three basic possibilities:

1. Temperature gauge is giving a false reading.
2. The thermostat is stuck open.
3. There is no thermostat.

Pull the temperature gauge probe and put it in some boiling water, and read the gauge in the cab. It should read around 210 degrees.

If it does, then replace/install the thermostat.

Every time that happens to me somebody asks "When's last time you checked fluid level in the radiator?" my answer is always "Well,..... never." It's usually real low.

How fast is the engine running and hard is the engine working? If it's running at full speed on with a load like a feed grinder or pushing heavy snow, it should be throwing plenty of heat out the radiator. If it's only idling with very light loads and the cab heater is set on high it could have trouble reaching operating temperature. Are you using a block heater to warm the engine before starting it?

If the coolant level is good and it's working hard enough to throw heat out the radiator, it does sound like a thermostat could be stuck open. An easy way to test the old thermostats or new ones is to dunk them in boiling water and watch them open and close properly. If they are OK I'd check the gauge next.

Anything is possible on a 40 year old machine, check the simple/inexpensive things first.
