AR rear axle removal

I have a 1945 AR that has quite a howl in the back. Wanted to remove the axles to check bearings. The left axle loosened easily but the right one won't budge. I tried driving a splitting wedge between but still won't budge. Is there another trick to try or should I just put it back together and run it.

Hit the center with a sledge hammer , like you would do when removing a truck axle. sometimes it would take a few good wacks for it to break loose. so dont be scared to hit it hard

Cast Iron and sledge hammers make a dangerous combination. Don't want to brake something.

What will not loosen??????? The axle to the wheel hub or the axle to the spur gear??? It makes a difference to how you loosen them.

If your having trouble getting the gear unstuck off the axle here is trick I have used for years.

On the old two cylinders the rear axles are not that far apart in the housing. Loosen the nut on the axle your having trouble with. DO not take it off!!! Leave it on to where it is not out past the end of the axle. Then find some steel flat that will just fit between the ends of the two axles. I usually use one of my hydraulic press push plates and 2-3 inch wide 5/16-3/8 steel. Now that you have some steel spacer back the nut off until it is pushing against the flat steel. Your using the nut like a reverse puller. When you get it tight than go to the side your NOT taking out and hit the end of that axle real hard. The shock wave with transfer to the stuck axle. This will usually pop them right loose.
