What was the idea behind long bar short bar tires?

I remember growing up when long bar short bar tires became all the rage. I remember for a while at the local Co-op you couldn't buy a regular long bar tire. I never liked the long bar short bar tires and still don't. The only set we ever had that I thought was a pretty good tire was a set of Armstrongs. I'm curious though...what was the idea behind them or what benefit was they supposed to have?

We have a old set on a 1066 traction wise they suck!
On the road was smooth they seemed to have lasted a
long time to! But in the field when soft they dont
go!

My cousins have a set on an 1850 Oliver. On some hard surfaces they seem to be more "bouncy". You can feel each lug as it goes around.

My in laws had them on their deere 7800. Struggled to stick
to the ground while pulling a ih 6/18 720 plow. Put a new set
of firestones on it a few years ago and it's a totally different
tractor.

The ony thing worse was the "710" that had all short bar. They were very soft like an inner tube with nobs on it and stubble ate them up.
