Farmall Super M Generator

Having problems brushes leaving a carbon build up on the armature. After running for several days the build up stops the charging. Clean it off charges just fine. I've replaced the brushes several times nothing seems to work. Any Ideas.

the armature needs to be polished round and round to assure the polishing grooves are in the direction of the motion. The brushes might be of poor quality and chalking away (could be from the land of Not Quite Rite) the brush springs could be weak and allowing the brushes to vibrate and chatter on the bars. There are tension specs on them, sometimes the springs heat from a bad connection, and loose temper. Jim

Just to add, the insulation between the commutator bars might need to be cut down in an armature lathe. Over time the commutator bars wear and the insulation will protrude slightly and also gets a slight build up of brush material in between the bars. At that time the bars can be trued up as well so they will contact the brushes more evenly.

generator #: 1100501
Spec #: 1778
Brush spring tension: 24 oz
Field current draw, 6 volts @ 80°: 2.5 - 2.72 amps
Generator rating: 7.0 volts
Rpm rating: 2400 rpm
Current cut out limit (regulator), maximum output: 16 - 19 amps
Output voltage: 6.9 - 7.1 volts
Test rpm: 2500

To prevent that you need a smooth, clean, polished, concentric armature commutator that has had its mica insulating segments properly undercut plus proper brush hold down springy tension.......
