Is there anybody out there that is bored and unfortunate enough to have had to watch the show Amish mafia on the Discovery channel? If so what do You think is the real story? I know there are some folks from the PA and OH area on this site that can tell us how it really is. As for Myself I have visited and observed how the Amish deal with the English in My neighborhood and I have never seen any altercations or dealings that were not beneficial to both sides. Unlike the Discovery channel portrays on their show. And for the record I think Lebanon Levi is a big fat overgrown p---y that needs His a-- kicked

I have no time for them. I bought my land from them back when I was young and dumb. Looked at the patch at 7 pm got finished talking to the realtor about 830 told him I would call in the am and I wanted to slepp on the decision, first mistake , he calls me at 730 am ans says he has a cash buyer. I say ok and hang up madder than a wet hornet I was. Couple days later realtor calls says the buyer is going to cut some trees and resell. I lookk at the markedtrees and for 20k less thanoriginal price make a deal, second mistake. At the closing 60 days later the trees still aren't cut I give an additional 60 day period to get the job done third mistake. On the 60th day the skidder shows up I call ans say I'm sorry but the time is u.p He tells me the trees will be cut and can't stop him. TThat turned out to be tru. Trees get cut and after amonth thepile isn't getting gone . I call and he says the log trucks are all busy. I reply the logs go or they gonna be cut into prices that he will need a dump truck to haul as all the log trucks are busy.

Moral of the story never trust a realtor in bed with an amish logger and think the deal will go smooth fo everyone

Thats been my one and only deal with them

I've dealt with the Amish around Lancaster/New Holland PA quite a bit over the years and have gotten to know several really well personally and as far as I'm concerned and know about the Amish the show is a total fraud and ridiculous.Just like all groups of people there are ones you want to deal with and a few you don't.

I have no problem with the Amish or their form of Christianity. The problem I have is the special treatment they receive from state and local government. They use their buggies on public roads for private personal transport, therefore they should be required to have license plates and liability insurance on them. They should also have a drivers' license. If their religion forbids it, fine, don't use the roads.

I have had no direct experience, but from what customers say that haul them around, it seems they tend to be users and try to get over by pushing the terms of an agreement after the handshake.

The show is a Whiteman created pile of garbage.
The very last thing Amish want or need is to be
in any kind of spot lite. All this false Drama
On every reality shows is nothing but Garbage.
& It's not intertainment to me.

All I will say before you comment live next door to a family. be prepared to have dogs cows and of course horses in your fields and in your yard . over Amished Randy

Those who produce these kind of shows are on a mission to defame everything that's decent in this world. Now they have even sunk to putting on a show trying to drag Branson through the mud.
One can only hope there's a special place in H3ll for those people.

I live amoungst the Amish, and deal with them on a daily basis - I also deal with (English) loggers every week. Of the two - never trust a logger. While every group of people - Amish included - have their "bad boys", I've found 99.999% of the Amish more trustworthy than almost ANY "English" in the area. In Missouri, they DO pay tax on their buggies (no plate or insurance, though). Only seen the show once - and that was enough - total BS.

In the end, the Amish are just like the rest of us, they just live more simply...

I don't understand why people even watch this stuff.
Are their own lives so bereft of meaning or creative ideas that they can find no other way to entertain themselves?
And why would you watch it and then complain about it?
Did someoneone force you to look at it?
I would be ashamed to admit I had nothing better to do.
Shut your TV off and go do something else.

My wife and I honeymooned in Lancaster, PA., and on our last day we took a buggy ride next to the hotel. I asked the buggy driver if he was Amish or Mennonite. He said he was neither, was raised Amish, but never joined the church as an adult. He asked me about that show. We told him we had never seen it, but figured it was crap. He laughed and said he grew up playing with "Lebanon Levi", and the fellow that played him wasn't Amish either. This guys brother was the bishop n that show, and guess what! He ain't Amish either!!!
Driver's name was Jake (big surprise!), and he told me he goes by "Amish Jake" on Facebook, and was going to play an Amish man on TV with that guy Barry, from storage wars. He did!

I have a hard time believing that the Amish have a full blown criminal enterprise operating in their midst that engages in extortion among other things. Are the Amish perfect? No. Are the Mennonites perfect? No. They are no different than us in that they have good, bad, and otherwise. They might be a little better than us in that the really bad ones get shunned by the community while some of our bad get pats on the back for getting away with something. But still there are ones that are bad enough that nothing ever happens to them. It seems like a couple of the area ones are due for a shunning from what I hear.

Most loggers whether Amish or not , are slippery customers. The not only steal logs that are not to be taken (by accident of course) but leave tons of trash behind. Had a once and only deal with loggers, Really crappy deal.

I have had several dealings with the Amish around the Long Prairie, MN area.

All have been good guys. They they are shrewd but fair businessmen. I think they quite enjoy the touristy people that think they are simpletons.

The two I know pretty well are both named Eli. One has a full blown machine shop. All his equipment is run off jack shafts running through his floor and along the walls powered by a yanmar diesel motor that sits outside his building. It is a really cool setup. The other is our farrier.

They are up to date on current events, and have plenty of opinions to offer. Both enjoyable guys to visit with. BW

I HATE that show. I've got a lot of amish friends in OH. There are SO many solid, upstanding, nice, hardworking amish, and these )#(*$'s have to go and do a documentary on a few bad eggs, making them all look bad.

Because of course, nobody wants to watch a documentary on SIMPLE people - our society is to fascinated with tearing people down and seeing the worst in everything.

And on top of it, they get so overly dramatic every step of the way. It's just so ridiculous that I find it unwatchable.

I wish people would just leave them alone. That's all they want is a community where they can live their lifestyle without all the modern conveniences and trappings of our modern society.

But the sad reality is that if you're different, other americans will stick you under a microscope and sell tickets. That's all this show is - it's sticking them under a microscope and poking them with a stick so they perform in a way that'll make more people watch and sell more advertising.

Just like the other show that was all about people "breaking out", getting "smuggled" out. It was so awful, and so far from reality that it hurt to watch any of it.

They best watch out, IN now requires plates, insurance, and a state ID to operate mopeds under 49cc. I don't have issues with farm vehicles, just their private use buggies. Using a buggy to go to the store everyday is no different than me driving a car, except they pay no road, wheel, or use tax like I am required to do whether I use the vehicle or not. They should be held to the same standard as everyone else, that includes DUIs. Walking, bikes, tractors, etc. do not have narrow wheels that rut soft pavement or a power source that craps wherever it pleases. Although, most of them are using crap catchers now. They have been told to keep their steel wheeled tractors and wagons off the road in my area. Tractors on the road are covered under your umbrella farm insurance policies.

I do think bicyclists should be required to pass a basic traffic safety course.

The fuel in my tractor comes from the corner gas station, therefore I paid road tax on it. I have no issue with farm related vehicles, just private use vehicles.

I dropped our directv a year ago and don't miss it or its overpriced bills. Before I quit it I did watch the first episode for 5 minutes and changed the channel.

What bothers me is they cancelled "Dirty Jobs" for this steaming pile of crap that isn't even a reality show but is supposed to be. Dirty Jobs was a A+ show with a host that is nothing less than a good working person himself and he gave credit to hard working people where credit was more than due.

Amish are held to the same standard as everyone else you can take your buggy to the store anytime you want and as many times a day as you want.
Tractors can go on the road and many do with drivers that have no insurance. Its a free country get used to it.

Its not too difficult to discern from reality to what a television producer and film crew do to sell to an audience. Its a bunch of sensational nonsense, dramatized to apparently capture viewers. If they went in and filmed the everyday mundane lives of the amish or anyone for that matter, it won't sell. What does that say about society, we feed off the misfortune or undesirable high profile events of others when conflict arises? That's how they see it, feed the masses what they want, which is entirely sad.

They show a lot of destruction of property amongst each other, conflicts with "english" that cater to stray amish or those who are vulnerable and are exploring the world outside their young amish livestyle. So we are shown home wrecking and destruction of bridges that used to connect people? That's some great content.

Its purely evident that depicting field work, livestock care, putting food on the table, good honest craftsmanship, raising barns or useful buildings, recreation, family or "amish events" good honest dealings between people, people respecting each other and working together, resolving conflicts or problems in a civil manner, has no place in this television producers agenda. Anyone with a hint of morality would never give a show like this much credibility with the exception of recognizing that much of the world operates this way, and the minority is those that do not.

Maybe when things get worse, there will be a show that documents the honorable way of life, because it will be as rare as some aborigine tribe that has never seen the world outside of their realm.

You should have not signed the offer to purchase unless all of the problems you encounter were covered. Have dates certain and penalties if not met specified in the contract. Never use a contract without all the conditions and possibilities covered. Have a good experienced lawyer.

You could have had the same problems you had if you were dealing with the English.

You have the option of riding a horse or driving your buggy, just the same as they do.
No one is forcing you to drive a motorized vehicle!

we live around amsih and the show is junk (putting it nicely) you would NEVER get a true amishman to be on the show. always remember amish are people too and they all sin like the rest of us.

There is an amish mafia but unless you do business with them you'll never see it and evme then you need to keep your eyes open. you had better do what the bishop and/or the other big/rich family says or they will shun you or put you out of business ect. this is true, i've seen it

I generally avoid doing business with amish. I've been cheated/attempted rip off by them almost half the time.

I sold a combine to an Amish guy down in Harmony, Mn. I drove it the 130 miles to deliver. He wanted the Perkins 4-cylinder from it. Was going to scrap the rest. Anyhow I got there about 20 minutes before my wife who was going to pick me up so had a nice visit with him. Fascinating way of life. Was hoping they would have me in for homemade bread and jam but no such luck. Nothing but good things to say about that family.

Did you ever see the shows he did--"How Booze Built America"? The first two are real neat. Man almost everyone was half zonked!

(quoted from post at 08:39:26 02/11/15) As far as I know anyone Amish or not can ride a horse, drive a buggy, ride a bicycle, walk, run, drive a tractor etc on a public road without a license or insurance.

No Amish have licenses. And how would they get insurance with no ID?

(quoted from post at 20:05:25 02/11/15) Do the Amish pay income taxes?

Absolutely! and property tax, a majority of which funds the public school and since they do not send their children to the "english" school, they are paying for the "english" children's education. Plus they then pay out of their pocket to fund their own Amish public school.

The Amish do not pay into Socialist insecurity though, since they take care of their own elderly relatives.

(quoted from post at 08:43:34 02/11/15) All I will say before you comment live next door to a family. be prepared to have dogs cows and of course horses in your fields and in your yard . over Amished Randy

The Amish will knocking at your door wanting to use your telephone. Then ask if they can place their freezer in your garage or shed.

Ive got a family of them across the road from my grandpas farm. I get along with them but try to avoid them as they don't seem to never know when to leave. I do try my best to stand upwind from them as well, I know there have been times I probably don't smell much better but I'm guessing they are immune to it! A guy I knew from the nearby town had a couple of them working for him on his honey farm, he told me they're good workers, are friendly to you but all they're really after is your money. (Meaning they're only working for you because your paying them, not a buddy stopping by to lend a hand)

(quoted from post at 04:26:57 02/12/15)
Not the ones that deal in cash. Nor the Amish construction companies owned and operated by the church.

The cash payment is accurate, but the church owning a construction company is false. There is no "church" as some people think. They consider the people in their community as their church.

(quoted from post at 07:12:49 02/12/15) Are they exempt from SS or are wages just paid in cash and unreported?

The government exempts them from paying SS tax. The Amish went to Washington to argue this point and won.
