Farmal H....what type of engine oil

I changed the oil in my H. It hadn't been for who knows how many years before I owned it. It seemed to quickly foul the plugs. What caused that? Will I have to use like 40/50 weight now?

It could be fouling because it's just flat wore
out.Or it could be running wayb too rich.As far as
oil.use 15/40.The same as you run in your
car/pickup.Before you drain,add a couple qts of
diesel fuel to it.Idle/run easy around the yard for
a half hour. Then drain. The diesel will help to
clean/wash the inside.Fill with fresh oil.Re place
the filter after 5 to 10 hrs run time.Change the
oil/filter again at 50 hrs.

I had a Cub that I bought that started smoking after I changed the oil. The smoking eventually went away after several oil changes. I think perhaps the rings had to re-seat themselves after the gunk got removed. I would run straight 30 wt. in it and change the oil often. Could be that you have ungunked the engine and the only solution is a rebuild.

Yep,thats true. All the gunk could have been 'sealing' leaks...The rings may reseat,or an OH is in the future

Clean it out good, might flush once with Diesel, then work the snot out of it and see if it comes out of it.

Use Rotella or Delvac 15-40. Use a little MMO or Seafoam
and change the oil often for a while.

Put non foulers on the plugs. I keep set around in case I need
them.

Is the plug oil fouled or fuel fouled ? Could be lots of things plug wire , plug , sticking valve but if it is oil fouled that soon you probably have a pretty worn engine , bad rings or a really worn valve guide .

Is it possible the oil was really low before the
change? Any possibility it has the wrong dipstick
and it is now overfull?

Some older, well worn engines do better keeping
them 1 quart low. We have a forklift with a
Continental 4 cyl. Fill it to the full mark, it
will smoke and pour out the rear main. Let it seek
it's own level, about a quart low, it will run
that way for months, minimal smoke or leakage.

Not trying to be picky, but an H wouldn't have a dipstick.

Sounds like an H my uncle bought years ago. It had not been running in years. Some of it was apart like the radiator. Story was it had a knock ? Well I got it back together and running. Seemed to run fine with no weird noises ? Well then after an oil change it started the knocking !!! Engine needed new bearings and maybe the crank reground can't remember all of it for sure now.
