John Deere 1952 Model 50 Tractor! ? Need some help?

Hello,

Welp just bought me a 1952 John Deere 50" in mint shape a one owner tractor it is...... :D Anyways, I wanted to know about oil types ? And would anyone know what type would be the best for this tractor? I have heard that New age car oil is not so good on these old machines ? So..... This is my question to someone out there that has some info on the John Deere's 50's 60's and on in the Gas Engines. What would be the best ?

Thanks

Wes Verbal
Kingsport,

Put 15-40 or 10-30 or 10-40 in it and don't worry. They aren't fussy. The one thing I would watch is if the previous owner used 'old age' non-detergent oil in the engine. A 'new age' detergent oil will start cleaning up the gunk the non-detergent oil leaves behind and will plug the filter quicker than normal till it's completely cleaned out like it should be. Maybe the New age oil he talked about is 5-20 or 5-30, good for new cars but not good for tractors that run loose like the two bangers.

I thought the first numbered series tractors came out in 53. Could be wrong.

FIRST thing is to order an owners manual.ASAP! I
run 15/40 fleet diesel in all my tractors.Gas or
diesel.Any good quality oil is good.Oil today is
MUCH better than yesterdays oils.Dont bother/waste
your money on synthetics.'Dinosaur' oil is
fime(probably better for your old engine)Straight
20 will be ok.What I am saying,is the oil you use
in your car/pickup is fine for your old
tractor.Put regular hydralic oil in the
hydralics. The manual called for 10 wt.There was no
such thing as "hydralic oil" in those days.

howdy again !

Yeah I ran Numbers on my John deere few days ago it was in the 50245 range on production which I think is the 1st year John Deere Made them in 52" with the 1st run of power steering.? Anyways back to the oil thing..... Yeah I did place an order for a Book at davenport "johnDeereCo." yesterday afternoon. The guy that I bought it from said he had no clue when the last time the oil had been changed? So..... That's my big big worry on the whole deal. I want to make sure put right stuff in there and not damage anything.

You do have a real early one. If I read it right it's the 245 th one made.

Yeah..... Its in wonderful shape I'll try to post some photos of it soon. It was sold out of Greeneville Tenn. area late 52. I was told?
So.....Tell me On what type brand of oil would you recommend ? Make that is? or just buy the " Tractor Supply" type or John Deere brand.

Thanks Wes,

You might want to change the filter at couple times.Say 10 and then 25 hrs?If its been a while,I would add a couple quarts or so of diesel to the oil.Run easy/idle around the yard for half hour or so. Then drain. That will really help to 'clean' the crankcase.I do that when I buy an old tractor with really dirty oil. Seems to help.

TO swap out unknown oil, use cheap generic 10-40, and a new filter, run it for 5 hours (watching the oil pressure gauge. If it zeros out stop) then switch to a good brand Like Delo, or Rotella, or other brand name 15-40 and run it for another 20 hrs or so. If the oil gets black and dirty, change it again. After two or three changes it will be fine. Jim

TSC oil will be fine. But run the same oil as you run in your car.Keeps things simple....No inadvertant 'mixing'.
