OT Radio Shack is busted

Read today where Radio Shack filed for bankruptcy today.

I have a schematic for replacing the relay and kickdown switch for the overdrive system on my Hudson with a couple of components from Radio Shack. Basically, take the mechanical components out of the system and replace with electronic, so you don't have contacts getting perpetually corroded. But obviously I waited too long to order them.

Anybody have any ideas about crossing Radio Shack electronic component numbers with other manufacturers who are still in bidness?

From what I heard, about half the stores will close. I was in the local one yesterday getting some co-ax ends. I didn't ask if they were staying open. Hope so.

I used to love the place, but they got to where they were more concerned with the current phones, video games, and RC that the space devoted to the electronics was slim to slimmer, so I rarely ever went there. There used to be another place in Charlotte that kept a lot of stock on electronic items, but it had become more of side deal in with their computer service. Basically they rarely ever replaced what they sold, so their supply of parts was constantly getting smaller. Ultimately they had a fire that gutted the building, so they moved and do nothing but computers anymore.

That said, the two links below will take you to Allied Electronics, and Mouser Electronics. If it's an electronic part and one of the two doesn't have it, you probably don't need it.

Don't be too quick to put them in a grave. You might still be able to get your parts. Being bankrupt is not the same as going out of business. Remember that GM and Chrysler were bankrupt a few years ago.

I would add Newark Electronics.

One of these days I'm going to learn how to add a highlighted website so you can just click on it.

I went into the local Radio Shack a while back and asked for a radio antenna for my tractor....young kid said "we don't have radio antennas". I said, "but it's RADIO Shack". He shrugged his shoulders and walked off.

I haven't ordered anything from any of them in awhile, so I had forgotten about them.

To put in a direct link, pull up the site you want to link to in another window. Copy and paste the web address to the window under the one where you type your message, that says Optional Link URL. If you have more than one, put a comma between them. Once you have the links in place, then go to the next line titled Link Title. The same applies here, you can name the sites you just linked to, and again, more than one put commas between them. If you leave it blank it will simply show on your post as Untitled.

Back in another lifetime when I commited teaching an excited seventh grade boy asked if I knew of anyplace selling FLUX CAPACITERS (sp). Told him allied catalog had them in the older catalogs. He left so excited I felt bad, well almost felt bad.

I read last summer they didn't have enough money to close the doors. This was the only way out for them.

I have a place near me called U Do It Electronics.
Not sure if they are a franchise or stand alone store but they have ten times the components as Radio Shack.

Well, that didn't work.

I just stopped at RS today. I needed some alternator diodes. They didn't have them in stock so I paid for them and they ship them for free. I guess if I lose my $3.50 on that four pack it won't kill me. I doubt they are shutting up though, since the kid placed the order and all. They are just mailing them out of another store, though.

Mike, not telling you anything you don't know but bankruptcy filing doesn't equate to locked doors. When I checked, they were still up and running...

my understanding is some stores are company owned others are privately owned franchised stores that will have current stock for sale until stocks are depleted or they find other suppliers for merchandise

Mike - I did a quick search for the 275-218C relay and found at least one on E-Bay.

$5.09

The other one "looks" like a common ice cube relay found in every auto parts store. Didn't investigate it thoroughly though.

I needed a few 4AA side by side battery holders for a project last summer. Radio shack did not have them on the rack, but ordered them shipped direct to me ( I am 100 miles from the Radio Shack store.).

I clicked the link for Allied to see if they have them. Allied appears to have the exact part for $1.06, while I paid about $2 for them at radio shack
That gap may close quite a bit if I added shipping and sales tax to the allied order.

I book marked those two electronics store links in case my only RS closes.

I seem to remember getting Allied radio shack catalogs 40 years ago, Was that the same Radio shack and Allied a RS store brand ??

And then I wonder - are you using a "hybrid" electrical system on your Hudson? Where the solenoid operates on 6 volts but the relay control circuit is 12 volts?

I remember my brother being concerned about burning up the expensive and rare overdrive solenoid on his '47 Plymouth. He has a simple but different electrical system on it so he is able to run the original 6 volt accessories while also running the modern 12 volt stuff.

So, they are closing half the stores, the other half are going to some sort of Sprint store, and the franchise stores are 'not affected' by this.

Well, other than their franchisee won't be around, I'd say they are affected then!

That all is a bit confusing.......

Web site says they will be open for a while yet, online and 1/2 the stores, business as usual there.

Will kinda miss my local one, has a smart gal that is pretty good at helping with everything, and they had some neat stuff the past 3 Black Fridays, spent a few bucks with them the last few years. Think it is a franchise store, but can't see it remaining open any which way.

And besides, where will I get support for my TRS-80 computer now?

PJH:

Actually it's quite simple; just use two 6 volt batteries & a series / parallel switch. Get the best of both worlds. LOL
