G.A.P. Anyone?

Attended a seminar today at the local college, looks like anyone farming with a gross income of $25,000 or more per year will be required to be GAP or Government certified to produce certain crops and sell them.
Direct and indirect irrigation is another topic requiring water use logs and water samples.
Get certified each year or get fined, and not be able to sell your crops.
I guess it all comes down to traceability and too many people getting food poisoning in this country.

Huh. Hadn't head of it. Appears to be focused on truck farming, garden crops?

In the grain world, we have heard of Best Practices being preached a lot. I presume someday that nice talk will become paperwork mandates for us as well.

What do we want? No control over the safety of our food? Sometimes big brother HAS to be looking over us. We don't live in this perfect little world where every food producer is dilligent and clean. Why do some of us grow our own food? Is it because we think we are saving money or is it because we feel our garden produce is better than what we buy in the store. I have a feeling my garden veggies are safer than store bought. Every time I hear about some mass food poisonings in the news I get hesitant to buy from the store. If the 'nazis' weren't watching over our food production what would our food supply be like?

The bigger fruit & vegetable farms that sell through Brokers have been onboard with GAP for years. Now the Government wants the smaller growers to get onboard with it too. I'm not complaining about it, just say'in....

I heard something about that on a morning farm show on TV. I don't recall everything, might have been something about you need to have a license to buy seeds, only 80% of seeds can be genetically altered. Again not totally sure, it was early and my brain wasn't up yet.

I've heard many times, organic produce is most likely to have
issues, with the use of manure there are opportunities for bad
bugs to be in the food.

With 100 s,pm all food companies, if 4 random people get sick
across the country no one ever put it together. Just got a bug
somewhere and got over it and went on with life.

Now with better ways to track food, and 4-5 companies
supplying the food, it can be tracked back much better. And it
makes national news.

Are we actually safer but just hear more news headlines these
days?

Lot of interesting thoughts out there.

I'm all for growing your own, does t mean you won't get sick
when a deer or cat walks through your garden, but its a good
way to go.

Most of this cones down to food prep, not really the growing of
it, but an interesting conversation.
