I don't recall the "winning" term being used about auctions until e-bay. Did I miss something?
When you buy something at auction, you bid the highest. What does that have to do with winning?

People today seem to think that most everything is winning or losing something. Nothing can be a good deal for both people anymore. One has to LOSE something for some else to WIN something in todays culture.

IF I EARN more money than someone else then THEY lost the money and I won the money in too many peoples opinion today.

How about the people that "snipe" the bids electronically in the last few seconds of an online auction. That seems a bit unseemly to me. I know many that "like" as they WIN something over the other bidders.

In several of the online equipment auctions the last 10 minutes of bidding is limited to those that have bid before. I like this better.

I enjoy watching when guys wait and wait to bid as the auctioneer keeps waiting for bid and not getting the article. Often an auctioneer I know will ask for bids, getting none will say sold, then guy will whine hey I was waiting to bid, you sold it too quick. Auctioneer says hey come to the sale, were not playing games. You want something then BID. Those guys are wasting everbodys time .

JD Seller ... you write, " People today seem to think that most everything is winning or losing something. Nothing can be a good deal for both people anymore. One has to LOSE something for some else to WIN something in todays culture.

I know you are talking about "auctions", but the "Win vs lose" commentary sure seems to fit our political process today. Don't really care which side of the fence you are on, the comments just kinda struck a ticklish spot with me....SOLD to the HIGHEST BIDDER!! lol!!

I almost never bid on anything online until the last 10 seconds so no bidders will have time to rebid.I do bid what my maximum bid will be and don't let what others are bidding affect my bid.If the listing says bidding is over at 10PM then it means it'll accept bids until that time so whats the big deal?

I keep telling my wife and kids that there are no winners at an auction, only buyers.

Funnies one I ever saw was an Amish father son team at an auction. Both were using super squirrel secret bidding that the auctioneer knew. The father had his hand up on his chin with his index finger extended up by his nose and would move his finger over his cheek every time he wanted to bid, the kid would reach up and tug his left ear. Standing side by side they were both bidding on the same items without the other being aware of it. After it got down to just the 2 of them bidding they drove up the price with a couple of bids each before the father figured out what was going on! He was pretty upset!

There was an auctioneer here who would always sell the first item off the jewelry on the first bid. It was a good way to set the pace for the entire auction.

Think of it this way an auction is a war to get highest price, fast; and the items are the battles. When the hammer comes down, someone "won" the battle and walks away with the prize (the item itself). Hence term winning bid. That's the only way I can explain it. I have heard that term and others like it at in person auctions so its not just online.

We live in a large country. No matter where you go you will find different terms used to describe the same thing. You might just "bought it at an auction", be, "high bidder", have it, "knocked off on you", or "have the winning bid". What matters is who goes home with the item up for bid. I don't question such terminology, I find it rather interesting.

At an online auction I frequent if there are any bids in the last few minutes the bidding is extended another 5 minutes. Keeps guys like you from doing the last second bidding, unless you want to keep the item going forever!

After reading all of the other posters' comments, I can add this:
There are MANY different ways to participate in an auction. There are also many different buyers with different characters, budgets, strategies, etc. Some are time wasters, some are downright annoying, and some get ignored - even by the auctioneer.

This much I know to be fact:
1) The highest bid buys the item.
2) Time wasters many times are left out of the bidding for being too slow to bid.
3) There are many times bidders with "auction fever" that get caught up in the bidding and end up paying more than they had budgeted for a given item.
4) Regarding "electronic sniping," it seems to be a less than honorable way to bid, BUT the high bid still buys the item. In order for a sniper to get the item, they have to outbid your highest bid. As in the case of snipers on eBay. I simply decide what I am willing to pay for an item, enter that as my maximum bid, and if that turns out to be the high bid, then I buy the item. If not, the sniper outbid me, which in any case was MORE THAN I WAS WILLING TO PAY right from the start.
