Hydraulic fan

The last two times I've changed the hyd oil on my little terramite, it smelled burnt and was dark. I changed last oil and filter at 250 hrs.

After doing some research, oil can break down under pressure and temperature. I may have been part of the problem. After getting sticks stuck near the pump, filter, and hoses I built a solid skid plate. That may have trapped heat causing my problem.

So, I made a skid plate using expanded metal and attached an 8 inch radiator fan to expanded metal. Hope this solves my problem, because I have no way to safely install a hyd cooler.

If you are using hydraulic oil this may be your problem. My Terramite specs 15-40 motor oil in the hydraulic system, along with a sticker on the dash that says do not use hydraulic oil.

I read the directions on both tractor and manual. Have only used 10w40. The man at the hyd repair shop recommended using hyd fluid and I told him NO WAY. 10w40 is 10w winter, 40 in summer. I need to allow hyd to warm up before using it. A stiff Power steering reminds just how stiff the oil is. I think 15w would be too much for my winters.

Just got back from using terramite for an hour, no fan, oil temps around 125 F. I may not need a fan in winter, just the hot summer. I need to install a temp guage some how to keep an eye on things
