Row Crop Cultivator

Just bought this John Deere 3 Point Row Crop cultivator. I've never used a three point before and I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the arm on the top is for looks like it's connected to a chain and maybe hooks up with the top link?

Must be one of the first ones built for JD version of a 3 point 801. They had limited travel. But does help lift the unit higher. We had a 4 row on a 70. It had almost the same thing, but had solid rods with springs around them. Vic

I see where the top link goes but there's another flat bar that's connected to the shaft on the very top of the cultivator that apears to be connected to some chains that go down to the shovels. Just wondering what it was for and what you would tie the flat bar on the very top into.

I don't see any dirt fenders on the unit, but I am wondering if that is used to raise and lower the fenders for how much dirt is allowed to be thrown, on the plant stalk.

The only thing I can come up with is the chains raise what we call the shields or another poster called them dirt fenders. Come to think of it. I did make a mechanical lift with a hyd cylinder to lift the rotary shields using a rocking shaft chains on one of my cultivators and I have a sneaking suspicion I got the idea from a similar factory setup. It was handy when I was in corn that varied in height quite a bit through the field.

The chains hold the individual units when the whole thing is lifted, when they are down each unit can go up and down independently to fit the terrain of the field.

Odd for a three point. That is how front mount cultivators lifted, a hyd cylinder on each side would rotate the square shaft and pick up the gangs.

It,doesn't look like it was farmer modified opi to a 3pt from a front mount, too clean for that.

Wonder if they just kept the front mount design for a model until they figured out a 3pt doesn't need all that?

You must farm smooth ground and no rocks. This would be a good set up for me.It only has to raise up the one unit when going over a hidden rock,if it had to raise the whole cultivator it'd probably break something or at the very least make the whole cultivator miss a spot.

That looks like a cultivator made out of front mount cultivator rigs. The shanks and clamps do not appear to be John Deere, regardless of the color. I believe what you have is a "put together" cultivator made out of another brand of front mount. Mike

You may be right but it doesn't have anything that would look other than factory. No torch cuts or sloppy welds. I'll post a picture after I get it hooked up.

Thanks for the replys.
