NYS CDL Medical Examiners Certificate

Ok, so per the below post here and Tool Talk, I thought I would post some additional information that may be of interest regarding this subject, as well as some additional information that may be of help in general.

My medical examiners certificate was to expire on 1-22-15, so on that day I went in for the exam and passed same, a new medical examiners card was issued on that date. I mailed it into NYS DMV to the Medical Certification Unit on 1-23-15, they should have received it on 1-26-15 the latest. No lapse on my end, just the mail. I did this intentionally, waited til the 22nd etc,. to see what NYS DMV does once your card expires given they need a hard copy of it,(its supposed to change to electronic) They sent; Notice of Non-Compliance and License Downgrade, stipulating that on 3-19-2015, my CDL A would be downgraded. I assume I'll receive another notice rescinding or superseding the previous. Obviously, all CDL drivers should note the date on their med card and get the exam done well in advance, just common sense. I don't drive daily for a living, just a back up for one farm and any other opportunities that may interest me to do so, but I do maintain it and will do so indefinitely or such time I am no longer able. If by chance you (in NY) get a notice like this, they state to avoid the downgrade you must submit the current certificate and:

"We must receive your medical certificate at least 20 days prior to the effective date of the licenses downgrade to allow for processing time and to prevent the downgrade from occurring.

Ok, so in NYS, if yours does expire, they allow ample time ie; mine 1-22-15 expired, technically speaking and according to NYS I have until Feb 28 2015 to get it to them. I'm down graded on 3-19-15, so it would appear you have a grace period. In my case, its assumed the mail is received they got it on 1-26-15.

You can fax it to the medical certification unit at: (518)486-4421 or (518)486-3260

You can Email it to:

You can (in NY) check your own Medical Certification Status by creating an account at:

https://my.dmv.ny.gov/CRM/

Additionally, as of 5-21-14 commercial drivers must obtain their US DOT Medical Examiners Certificate from a certified medical examiner listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. It states to visit the following site to do this:

https://nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov
NYS MED CERT STATUS

FMCSA Nationa M/El Registry Site

I would have to go look up the time line but the way it works.

The state sends you a notice your medical card will expire xx/xx/xxxx
If you do not re-certify before that date they give you two grace periods of xx days and xxx days.
If you do not re-certify by the first xx date they mark your license as medically not certified.
If you do not re-certify by the second xxx date they remove your CDL privilege or marked canceled.
If tour CDL gets canceled you are suppose to start the process all over again (take all test again) to reinstate your CDL.

Thanks Billy for the info . I checked to see if my doctor was listed and she was. Last year they sent me a few threatening letters and I called the doctors office to see what the problem was and they assured me there wasn't any problem. Gets my blood pressure raised when they try to take it when I only had it for a few years . LOL, Greg

MO is basically the same way. My license last several years longer than the med card so every 2 years (have to look to be sure) I have to remember to get a physical before they downgrade my license! I'm like you I don't use it every day but if I need it I have it, and I'm not letting it go if I can help it.

I got the downgrade letter because I couldn't pass the physical "72 year old type 2 diabetic". I don't and haven't driven out of state in long time so I went down to the local DMV and asked to get it changed to intrastate only, no physical required and its done. These days I only drive it when my excavation buddy calls and asks for help, a couple times a year, or my driveway washes away from flooding. I still have a CDL and pay the big bucks for it just for those few times a year but I can't drive out of state with it.
