OT UG Dog fence

Anybody with experience or advice on buried dog fence? Do they work or am I wasting time? I have about 8 acres to fence and some of it is very rough.

Had one once work great for my shepherd but not so much for my Akita she was so strong willed. Depends on how well you train them too.

My folks had a golden retriever, "Molley" and he had to put in one of those. Kept her in but they ain't cheap. He ropped her in with about a three acher area. She took off to see the neighbors one time when the power was out for two days in the winter. Other than that they are good.

It cannot be assured that the dog will not go through. A mild mannered dog with an aversion to pain will have no issues, very reasonable solution and works. An aggressive older dog, with willingness to chase (whatever) will probably tough through it at high speed. Most will respect the fence, Most will be "yard" trained so well that getting them out can be a chore, or require a car/truck. Even with it off. Jim

I installed my first one in 1994, worked great, lightning took controller out in 1996, got new controller (underground fence brand), I reburied a new line in 2002 (had a neighbor that liked to till over the property line once they figured out where/what the line was....) they moved in 2002, Fence has been used for my last 3 dogs, all black lab mix, once dog is trained on it easy to keep them in, We go thru routine when walk time so he knows collar is in garage and it is "safe" to cross the line. I have about 1500' line buried, expensive to put in but the dog keeps deer away, and gets tons of excersize

Worked great until my beagle figured out all he has to do is run and he can get through it without getting shocked. Its the top of the line, set to the highest output Invisible Fence brand, and he still can run through it. Only took him about 10 weeks to learn how to beat it. Waste of 3 grand!

I have one and it works great. If you have a long haired dog you may have problems in the winter with the hair. Make sure you get one with different shock levels and one that you can shut the warnig off, I had a chocolate lab and he would sit in the warning area for the minute and wait for the system to shut off and then run thru it. He also got to where he would sit and take the shock until it shut off. I bought another controller that I could control how much shock it would put out and on high it would almost floor him. Never had a problem after a couple treatments of that. I could shut the system down for a week and they would stay in. The deer would avoid the wire like mad unless it was snow covered

worked good for us, dog ran a deer thru it once; caught him and took him back to the spot with my hand in his collar and let it him 2-3 times and he started spinning around almost breaking my fingers but he learned, would NOT cross the line for even a couple of pieces of bacon laying on ground

I was told that dogs with heavy coats, like Pyrenees for example, it does not have enough effect. Never bothered with it though, we have regular electric.

Both of my girls have wireless fences. Works on their dogs. Small house dogs. Has 2 settings one is about 50 ft. Even works going camping. You take off collar they are gone. But downside is have to have collar tight. So will gall their neck if left on 24-7. Costs 500 plus. Vic

We have relation that has dog with hunting blood in her and she great as long as no rabbits or squirrels run across yard. At times she will chase them and run right through the electrical fied but she won't come back through it.

We tried one on my 130# malamute. He would play with it and sit there while it was nailing him about with a smile on his face, like "that's all ya got? Bring it on!"

Tried it on our 2 german shepherds. Decided they were much to smart and the thing to do was to train them to stay around. So much for the fence. They are very much trained now to stay around. However depending on the space you have for them to roam I think the fence is a good idea

I buried one surrounding a little over 4 acres for my black lab. He didn't like getting shocked, but discovered pretty quick that if he ran fast enough he could get through it without getting zapped. That said, it seemed to work OK unless there was something antagonizing him enough to want to cross it.

I know several of my neighbors have them too, and they seem to work with their dogs. Ultimately I think whether one works or not is about as dependent upon how smart the dog is, as it is anything else.....

Had one for 10 yrs. and it worked great for two Jack Russels. Lightning struck a tree about 4'from the buried wire and it traveled thru the wire to well pipe then into the house and did $4,000 in damage. Luckily Ins. was fast and paid for all damage. The picture is of the well and the 2 ditches caused by the lightning the 2 wires made a loop that stopped 2' from the house and passed 3' from the well.

I have 2 acres wired in, trick is buy a decent system and make sure to buy good wire. Do not use the 20 gauge wire that comes with the kit. Mole and squirrels play heck with it. I bought 14 gauge wire from a online website. I also rented a wire trencher to install. Works great.

37chief....underground fence winding up on mower ??? I think u r cutting your grass a little short !! LOL

I asked around before I made a purchase. We decided against it and bought a wireless fence. It works great. Keeps the dogs just where I want them.

I put one in for my yellow Lab "Molly". It worked well in warm weather, but has not been as effective this winter. The instructions said to mount it where it stayed above freezing, but being the rocket scientist type, I ignored that and mounted it in an outbuilding. The jury isn't in yet..... we'll see what happens in spring.

I have one and it has worked pretty well for our Blue Heeler. When first got her we used to chain her out. Well for a small dog she is strong ! In soft ground she would keep yanking the chain and pull the stake out and all. Last one was a 3 foot rebar ! That caused a lot of problems as she ran off and got hung up. Lucky when I called her name I could hear her bark and find her. As soon as the weather got nice that year we put the in ground fence in. Been about 10 or so years now. I have more trouble with collars not holding up. My most reliable collar has been a heavy duty old model one. But even now I go thru about a battery a month as she has started to wise up and just let it beep and drain them down.
I wish I just had a real fence up now ! Added bonus to a real fence is it would keep my dog in and more importantly everyone else's dogs OUT !

I have a labborder collie mix, with about 1 acre of invisible fence. With proper training, most dogs will accept it. Training is the key. I had a hound rescue dog before, and he respected it because he was trained about 2 months to know his borders. He was tempted many a time to chase a rabbit or squirrel, but stopped when he got to the border. There are many options out there, mine is from a company called Pet Defence. I recommend it, may only be available in certain areas.
