another tractor mishap

A LaPorte county man died trying to start his tractor. He was run over by the tractor ,dragged behind it and then suffocated by mud churned up by the wheels after it became stuck against a tree.Police said the tractor must have been in gear while he was trying to start it.He was unable to breath as dirt filled up his mouth and nostrils
as the tires kept spinning

That accident was TOTALLY preventable. That man did not have to die....All we need to do is stop and THINK what we are doing. That kind of thing should be a 'wake up call' to ALL of us.I am guilty as well. My sympathys to his family.

Tough way to go. Neighbor had the seat fail on his Farmall M, it dumped him and the steering went to full turn. The tractor ran over him many times going in a circle.

Killed by your own tractor just dont seem right, but it happens.

Be careful out there.

It happened at Hanna, Indiana. It said he got caught between tractor and box scraper on back of tractor and dragged him 200FT. before getting stuck against tree. He was in his 70's. From the report I got they still don't know why tractor started moving.

A year ago we traded all three of our tractors in on two with cab and air. This is another reason why cab and air tractors are nice. The only way they will start is if you are in the seat. I've only had one tractor start in gear on me and it was a 1570 Case cab and air back in the eighties. I was jumping it off with the cables on the starter rather than the batteries because it was so hard to get to the batteries on a 1570. I wasn't watching what I was doing and the cable leaned over from the weight of the cables and touched the small post on the solinoid and it turned over enough to start. I was blessed though with it being in a higher gear and it stalled when the outside dual hit my front bumper on my truck. It didn't hurt anything but I had to go back to the house and change my drawers. I've been extremely careful since and have warned others of the danger of jumping anything with a manual transmission. I also used to kick the bars around in a cotton picker until it caught my boot one day. I managed to get my foot out and scramble up in the cab and stop it to retreive my boot. It only had one hole in it. Young and dumb! I thought I was invincible. I also had two friends turn there tractors over on the Mississippi River levi bushhogging. Killed both of them. Another friend of mine had his shirt ripped off of him while standing in a grain hopper of a combine with it running. Stupid! It cut him up pretty bad. He was lucky it didn't kill him. Please be careful!

One time I didn't double check my old tractor was out of gear and clutch disengaged it fired right up ! It was in reverse which was a good thing as it backed away from me. Only thing hurt was a wooden tool box behind it as the drawbar broke the front of it. VERY LUCKY and gave me a wake up call !

Why do they always seem to start instantly if left in gear ? Any other time this tractor would of required at least a few turns and you would of seen it try to move.

Used to have this argument on here regularly. I never leave a piece of equipment in gear. There is pretty much always a way to keep it in place without it being in gear.

This is a good point to bring up. The seat is often overlooked on a typical fence row rescue but its condition is critical for safety.

People think that they are smart when they "jumper" across safety switches. I have a friend with a broken pelvis that would be dead if he had not been blessed with an intelligent quick thing wife.

I see a very dangerous feature in many tractors. I have an 86 IHC and if the engine stops you have no brakes or steering. I used it to haul 9 big round bales on the road. I would go into a big hill in High third and pull the TA back at 1500 at the top of the hill I would be back around 1500, I was always afraid the next shift would have to be to 2nd Hi and would have been afraid of missing a gear or killing the engine. I now use a smaller tractor that could have gears and brakes without the engine running.

AS I repair many tractors here in my shop I always make sure the safty switch is in working order before they leave.

This Fall a 35 year old boy lost his lower leg in a Deere 790 combine bin cleaning the bin out while it was running,, he had set a tool box on the seat to fool the safety switch,,, foolish things like this should be prevented, and the mistakes remembered...

Funny thing is, if you don't have to downshift for third, you probably don't have to downshift out of fourth either. And 4-3 is a lot easier then 3-2. Just downshift before using the ta. Let her pull down about another 50 rpm before the ta too.

That good to know then. There is no use using any safety equipment, safe work practices and isolating/protecting against hazards. Since it's of no use to waste time and money on safety.
When you go outside and it's raining. Do you wear an rain coat or do you count on the Almighty deciding if you get wet or not ?

Common sense and awareness of dangers and luck keeps one alive.

To compare that to wearing a raincoat or not when it rains is just stupid talk.
