What's wrong with my injector pump? Roosa Master DBG

I recently bought my neighbor's 1967 Case 580CK backhoe. The engine was running, all I had to do is fix up the hydraulics. Good deal for $2000!
The engine started to act up lately.. it stalls after running fine for 15-20 minutes and won't start again for a few hours. It got gradually worse, first it started ta stall after 1.5-2 hours, then 1, then 30 min and so on.
The G188D engine starts up pretty easily, it smokes and burns oil, but runs smooth.. then it just dies. After a few hours it starts back up again and runs fine for another 15-20 minutes then it dies again.

I'm pretty sure it's the pump, but I could use some expert opinion to confirm it and pinpoint what the specific issue could be. I saw seal kits for these Roosa Master pumps on ebay for around $30 would that be enough to fix this issue?

Also if you could tell me where can I find a service manual for it that would be great!

Thanks for any input.

Common problem on older RoosaMaster pumps.A plastic
retainer ring is disintgrateing.Remove the little
timeing 'window'.If you see little bits of black
'rubber',youve found your problem.Remove the pump
and get it serviced by a pro.

a black fungus grows in the fuel tank at the surface between the water & fuel. This black gunk clogs the shut-off valve, the line & the filter. Makes it act just as you describe. A common well-known problem in diesel equipment. The water is not supposed to be in the tank but condensation from partially filled tanks makes it there. Take the line off & blow it out; change filters, clean out the shut-off valve & drain the tank. Buy the liquid that stops the fungal growth & add it to the new fuel when you refill the tank & add it every Fall of the year.

X2 what Deltared mentioned. Next time it starts to die loosten the two screw timing cover on the pump, if it runs better without dieing with the cover loose the pump needs repair. Just repaired an Oliver pump for the same trouble.

The retainer ring is falling apart, as DeltaRed said. The bits plug
up the return elbow, which in effect causes the governor to slow
the engine until it stops. If you are well used to fixing equipment
it can be repaired with an ebay kit. If you are not comfortable
working on it , ask around for someone who might do it as a side
job. A pump shop will want half as much as you paid for the
whole machine to service the pump, though if you call around
you may be able to find one that will just do a basic reseal and
retainer ring for less.

Deere SM2045 has the reprint of the Stanadyne/Roosamaster tech manual. Covers the DB, JDB, CDC, CBC, JDC, Bosch-Scintilla, etc. It's also in the Allis Chalmers HD4 manual. Also in the Ford 4000 manual. I'm sure in other tractors books as well. I have it in PDF. Just not sure how to send it. It's a big file. I also have just the JDB/DB section in JPGs and it's about 40 pages. Here's what the first 10 look like. Hard to show good images on this forum.

Thank you guys for the quick responses!

Is that the timing window in the picture where I put the arrow? I don't think I can remove it without taking the whole pump off because the filter support is in the way.

@JDemaris, thanks, I was able to download the 2045 pdf from scribd.com!

After taking a quick look at the manual, I'm a bit intimidated..
I might send it out to this guy I found on ebay, he offers rebuild service for $315.
I'm also waiting to hear back from a local diesel mechanic.

Could the stall be caused by engine overheating?

Alright, so I found the little timing window on the side of the pump, it looks very clean inside, no debris even after turning the engine a few times.

I aligned the two timing marks and now ready to take off the pump.

I decided to get a seal kit and try to fix it myself. Let's see how that goes.

Any tips on what to watch out for is greatly appreciated!
I might make some videos about the rebuild process.

I did change the filters, the fuel is clean, no air in it and no leaks.
The engine starts up and runs good for 15-20 minutes, then it drops that, that's why I'm thinking it must be the pump.

UPDATE
I pulled the pump apart and there was no retaining ring in it!!! I did find bits of it during disassembly and it's not one of those upgraded ones that doesn't require a ring. It has those 3 pins sticking out.
Can't wait to put it back together to see if it works!! :)
