rearend oil

I want to change oil in my 38 JD A rearend and the dealer said to just go ahead and use hy-gard as this oil will work universally in all rearends and transmissions. What are the opinions on this here?

I would go with one of two. 1.80-90 weight gear oil or 2. 85-140 weight gear oil.I would use 80-90 if I was just showing or doing light work but if I was going to work it hard go with heavier oil.

You can go with the UTF type fluid or you can use the thicker stuff like the 80W-90 or the 85W-140. The UTF is your seals are iffy will tend to leak faster then the thicker oils

Hy-gard is formulated as a Transmission / Hydraulic Oil and is too thin. 85W - 140 is specifically formulated as a GEAR OIL.

Use the 85W - 140 .

If you are going to walk by and look at it setting in the cattle shed all winter 140 wt. might be alright. Otherwise I would go with Gl 1 80-90 wt.

i ran a John Deere B on a feeder wagon for about 10 years used hy guard in the trans, rear end sure is nice when its 0 out there and you start up and go no warm up to get the trans to turn. never hurt the gears at all

When we milked cows we hauled manure all winter long with a John Deere A with 85-140 in it and never had trouble shifting it. Your Hy guard will not give the lub to trans-rearend in summer (Gets thin in hot weather). With the 80-90 or 85-140 the trans-rearend will run quieter than Hy guard. If I had to run Hy guard I would add Lucas heavy duty oil stabilizer to carry and hold some of that Hy guard in top gears of tranny.
