I have what I believe to be a 1965 706 gas. Cast into the block
is 291..... I would have thought this tractor would have been a
263. Is it possible that a 1965 706 could have come from the
factory wiyh a 291 engine? Sorry, don't have serial no. handy
as tractor is 110 miles away. Thanks, Cmore

On a smooth piece just below the dist will be 263, or 291, it won't be a cast #, but a stamped one, 706's with the 291 will have longer frames.

Yes, it is entirely possible according to the tractor data site for that tractor. Just Google, (tractor data international harvester) Click on 706 and full engine details.

It may be a C291 but it isn't factory in a 1965 tractor. The C291 wasn't put in a production tractor until late 1966.

The tractor probably has a replacement block in it, if it's really a C291, and the stamped numbers you found are not part of the block serial number.

The serial number breaks for the change in engine from C263 to C291 occurred at 37236/37237 for Farmall models and 5273/5274 for International models.
