Auger style square bale elevator

Was talking with an old childhood friend the other night, got me thinking about an oddball bale elevator her dad had.

It was permanently attached to the side of their barn, and had a cage, with two augers running up to an elevator inside. Had a pull down leg, like a conventional grain/bale elevator. Ran off an electric motor.

Always liked stacking hay there. This thing worked pretty slick, and the inside conveyor had moveable diverters to save carrying bales all the way across that big old barn.

Anyone have an idea who built this setup? Seems to me what was left of the paint was dark green. Automatic was the brand, maybe?

Owatonna made one with augers. Dad was about to buy the elevator setup along with a New Holland bale retriever wagon when the big round bales came out.

We bought a big round baler instead in 1973.

I've seen a twin auger setup from a distance, lifts bales vertically up the wall.

An Internet search shows a homemade deal in Farm Show archives but they only allow limited access so hate to try to link to it.

I've seen them on barns in Eastern Iowa. Dunno who made them, but it was an interesting idea. Most I see mounted to the side of the barn are chain-type. They bring about scrap price, unfortunately. Big farms don't "waste" thier time with small squares.

Only think I ever saw or heard about were the chain type. Someware in all the stuff I have there is a advertisement for them but it would take me a month of doing nothing else to find it. Think there is one still on a barn a few miles from me but hasn't been used for many a year, no hay made. End of barn it was on a normal elevator could not have been used as it would have you setting in the middle of the road to unload.

(quoted from post at 09:16:24 01/21/15) i use to be Owatonna dealer never did see any thing like that. i don/t think they made it.

I saw a couple that were near new. Paint was yellow auger and red frame. Never checked to see who made them.

A farmer I used to help out had one. It was
slick, stayed permanently mounted to the side
of the barn. Never had any trouble with it
that I remember.

The big drawback was chaff falling directly on
you. Straw was terrible and alfalfa was almost
as bad. You were always horribly itchy after a
day of unloading bales.

I would run over and help him when I could from
the farm I milked on. Made for a miserable
evening choring and milking.

I'd chalk it up to a genius idea on paper, but
not that great in practicality.

I have no idea who made it. I think it was red
or orange. The farmer is past away, but I do
get by the farm fairly often. I'd bet it is
still on the barn. If I can, I'll snap a
couple pics BW
