Yesterday my gator was running fine and now today the motor started to knock. It has plenty of oil and never has used any oil. What would cause it to knock?

How old and what engine...Kawa I assume. What do the plugs look like? Do you smell gas?

The reason I ask is we had a problem with oil becoming a bit high high...fuel in oil. Plugs getting fouled and running hard, bogging and banging a bit.

Change oil and plugs and you were good for a bit...then it would start all over- quite suddenly.

I finally changed the fuel pump and we haven't had a problem since last August.

Is this your problem, I have no idea, but worth checking out. Good luck, Grant

CBBC,
What year is your Gator? Seems there is becoming a bit of a following on the 625/825 Gators (Kawasaki engines) with the crankcases slowly filling with gas.

Havent heard if there is a service fix out there or not.

Are the kaw engines with gas in CC, single cylinder carb units or the twin cylinder fuel injected?

Andrew, Reach under the bottom of the gator and find the 4 bolts that holds the motor down. If you can turn them by hand or if they are loose, that will most likely be your problem. This is a common problem with the 6 wheel gators. The bolts should be metric, but they are around a 9/16 and about one inch long. If they are loose, it will cause a knocking that sounds like your engine is going bad. Also, if this is your problem, message me and I will tell you what caused them to come loose. Please let me know if I can be of any further help.

Its an 07 6x4HD006063...whatever that serial # means. Its a Kawa twin cyl with a carb.

I should have checked it today...but was preoccupied with our JD 6300 loader tractor...someone installed the hydraulic coupler fittings and they finally let go.

Anyway the replacement fuel pump seems to have helped...

Ouch. I have a kaw twin FI in a 2012 Kaw 4010 mule. Do you think kaw fixed the problem or do I have something to look forward to?

My gas tank is not above engine. There is a fuel pump inside tank, which I'm thinking is required for all FI.

George,
You can check most forums and there is a fair amount of information that comes up on the 620/625 FI twins. I believe this engine is also used in the 400 series garden tractors as well.

I am not sure what engine you have, but it would make it interesting if you have the identical engine in yours, yet the only reports are out of the gator.

I started finding all this information since I need to replace my golf cart and have been poking around a bunch of forums.

I linked one forum for you. I have founds others that say the same.

gas in oil post

Ouch again, both my mule and gator use the same 617cc v-twin liquid cooled. Mine only has 175 hours on it. I will keep an eye on the dipstick. Thanks for the info.

The only good think about a kaw mule is the price and many other features that some JD don't have. I looked at gators before I got a mule. There was only $750 difference in price between a new year end kaw and a used 7 year old JD that was only a 2x4.

Yup, same 617cc between Gator and the Mule. I found similar complaints when poking around the Mule forums as well.

This makes me think its worth hanging on to my golf cart.

Rick,
My mule goes places a golf cart can't. I need 4 wheel and the power.

The only way raw gas can get in to the crank case has to be through the injectors. When I turn my key on, there are 5 red lights on dash. One is the fuel pressure. I hear the fuel pump kick on, before the light goes off. So I'm thinking perhaps older models may have not had a way to bleed off fuel pressure, injector leaks, cylinder gets raw gas, which leaks past the rings.

I have an old 15 hp briggs with plastic carb. It too would leak and fill crankcase with gas.

In your search, do you find all mules and gators with problem, or just the older ones?

George,
I am finding the complaints on the newer FI engines. 2010-2013. Both Gator and Mule.

I agree a 4x4 UTV does things my golf cart cant.

Rick,
You are just full of good news, my mule is a 2012. Thanks for the info. I'll have something to look forward too. My mule is very easy on gas. Just topped off the tank. In 6 hours it used 2 gallons.

Mine has to have some kind of fuel pressure bleed off. Each time I turn the key on, it takes about 4 seconds before the red light goes off and electric fuel pump stops. So if it takes less time to build pressure, I'll get a little worried.

If it is not that your motor is loose and the engine is actually knocking, then my suggestion to you is to take it apart and rebuild it. You should be able to get the parts to rebuild it from John Deere. I have never seen one of those engines go bad. My neighbor has had one for 20 years. He has had problems, but the engine is good. Good Luck with your rebuild.
