PJH, I have a few Aunts’, Uncles and cousins that live in Chester. My Dad was raised in Chester. I try and get there to see everyone once a year. The scenery in and around Chester is just beautiful. The people also are very friendly. I am in SW Mich. Deano……

At one time Randolph County was quite prosperous and they built one of the most elaborate courthouses in the nation. If you have time during your next visit go up into the dome of the courthouse and look across the Mississippi River into Missouri

Yes - Chester is a nice town. We live about 20 miles or so east of there, so we get there often. Good people! My wife is actually looong distant relation to Elzie Segar, the creator of Popeye. Her claim to fame, ha!

A slippy clutch on a loaded truck would be a problem on that hill. I remember one of the toll booth operators telling about trucks losing their brakes coming down the hill. They'd lose some momentum coming up to the toll house, but sometimes roll on out on the bridge. Toll booth is long gone, thank goodness. Speaking of losing their brakes - How about the panic lane on route 3 on the east side of town? It scares me just driving past it in a car. Railroad crossing at the bottom of a long steep hill and nowhere to go but that awful runout. The local truckers respect that crossing and come down pretty slow. Sorry to ramble. .

PJH,
Elzie Segar was quite the writer indeed. I have a book called “A History of Chester 1829-1979”. A lot of history in Chester. You may have eaten at Reid’s Harvest House. Bob Reid was my cousin. He just passed away last October. My Dad’s family were born in Vienna and then moved to Chester. Ok, Nice to speak with you! Thanks.

Yes - we're at Reid's often. 20 miles is "dangerously close" to Reid's, ha. I saw that Mr. Reid had passed away - I didn't know him, but the Reid family has a fine and popular restaurant.

I'll have to watch for that book. Randolph County is one of the oldest settled areas in Illinois. My wife's great grandfather was a Crisler, as was Elzie's mother. Very distant, but hey. . .

Best wishes,
Paul
