Farmall 140 Question

I was looking to take my Governor assembly apart and see if it need any cleaning, also when removing the cap is there suppose to be oil in it? Thanks Mark

The cap is the engine oil fill. Oil flows down into the oil pan, past the timing gears.

When the engine runs, it draws oil up from the pan though the timing gears and lubricates the governor. It should not be full of oil, or have a large amount of oil visible. Everything should be oily, but is probably covered in a grey/white snot, which is engine oil and humidity emulsified. Engine mayonnaise.

mkirsch, you are correct, looks like grey/white snot. If I pull the governor assembly out to inspect and clean, does the Timing on the tractor have to be reset and the magneito in distributor retime, or can you just put it back in the way it came out? any help would be appricated

If the gov is working, nothing leaking or noisey, I would not open that can of worms!

If the thermostat is working, and no mystery coolant loss, the milky oil should dry up with a good long hard running with the engine me up to temp.

Steve, Is removing the governor that big of a can of worms, everyone tells me it's not much to it, could you please explain, I was kinda reluctant to do it anyway.............Thanks Mark

I have not had the gov off any of my Farmalls in years but don't remember any problem doing it...

The drive gears for the dist does require lube from a external source... I put a grease fitting on mine and give it one shot of grease once a year...

Take the question to the IHC/Farmall board for confirmed info...
