Maple pollen

My ENT Dr. says Jan and Feb is maple pollen
season. My sinuses agree. So, if maple trees are
making pollen, is it also maple sirup time too?

Not here!!! We hang our buckets in late Feb. when the kids are out of school. It is generally March when the sap starts to run. Once the sap starts migrating up the trees, they come out of winter dormantcy, and start forming buds. At that point you will get pollen. Perhaps your climate is much milder there, than here in central NY., and the maples there are coming out of dormantcy.

It was +15 this morning in so IN. Our trees are dormant under +40 degrees. They might release miniscule amounts of oxygen but not much else at these temps. Jackson County has a maple syrup festival sometime around the 1st of March. We would not usually have maple sap flow until late February here.

Good chance my Dr may not be totally correct. He is what I found.

Silver maples begin producing pollen as early as January in the southern United States. Only the male parts of maple trees produce these egg-shaped, powdery, microscopic particles. Red maple trees begin releasing pollen about a month after silver maples. Typically, pollen season for maples lasts about one to two months before the trees flower and produce a small fruit.

Location
Maples pollinate earlier in the southern United States than similar trees growing in northern climates. In Oklahoma, for example, maples release pollen in February and peak in March. By April, Oklahoma’s maple trees have completed pollen season and begin to flower. States further north are likely to see pollen season just beginning as the season ends in Oklahoma. Typically, maples are finished pollinating throughout the United States by July or August. The worst month for maple pollen is generally the month after trees first begin to release pollen in any particular region.

Just let us know when the watermelon festival is starting! lol Used to love to go to Starve Hollow around labor day.Havnt been for years but its the one place i automatically think of going on vacation even though its been 20 years. lol
