three point log splitter

Do you think that you could run one of those with an 'A' John Deere? I know the output isn't all that much but I wondered if it would be enough. I wouldn't be splitting anything over 18" long. Probably something like a 20 ton although I doubt I could get that much force from it.

Why don't you look at a splitter that has a pto driven pump on it? I know Timberwolf makes one.

I've run mine for many years on a Case 430 and an IH 2424 - both less than 35 hp. The IH is an industrial tractor so probably has a bigger pump than the Case. Neither was real fast - but after the first 10 minutes it was fast enough for me.
Guess you would need to look for specs on your pressure and gpm.

Those old tractors only have around 1200 PSI if I remember right. So 20 ton would take a 6 1/2 inch cylinder, if my math is correct.

Then you add in low flow and you do not have a very good splitter tractor.

I will second using a PTO pump.

2500 PSI on a 4 1/5 cylinder would be 20 ton. Plus you can have a much higher gallon per minute pump.

I have a splitter I built to attach to my skid steer (john deere 250)
.has a 5 by 24 prince cylinder. I think the skid steer puts out
17gpm. I run it at 1/4 throttle. Want to buy it, it's for sale lol. I
moved to condo, don't need it anymore.

or better yet just get a stand alone splitter,...I have a nice 3 point and wish I had went with a stand alone, they are faster

pal of mine built 1 for me, very slow, You need a 2 way hydraulic system. If you are doing all the splitting by your self they are ok. If you have help you will be standing around waiting on it.

I built a 3-point that we use on our JD 4600, 3.5 dia
cylinder X 2500 psi, 12 gpm, only about 12 ton. It has
always split everything we put on it, and we have a lot
of pi$$ elm! We run the tractor about half throttle and
if my wife runs it and I carry the wood it's pretty
efficient. The thing I like about it is I can hang it
on the wall when we are not using it, we are short of
shed space.

I have run my splitter off of a SMTA Farmal for years, and also ran it on my 430 JD. I have friends who have run theirs on a Farmal M with belly pump. Not as fast as the pics on some sites but will make you sweet. I have split some pretty nasty wood with no problems
