After reading this article I feel richer.

Some of the countys are sparsley populated with no industry or has been industry. Some are large ranches or just desert.

I noticed Whitman County is the poorest listed for Washington State.
Interesting. Whitman county is predominantly large wheat farms. Largest town in the county is Pullman where Washington State University is located. I think there is a bit of statistics happening on some of these. If you pull all of the college students out of the data I wouldn't be surprised if Whitman county is above the state average for per capita income.

They used estimated incomes, not actual.
Red Willow County Nebraska. Not surprising when you consider half the businesses in the only major town are owned by one of about a half dozen families. They even got the girl's basketball coach fired this week because he was too hard on them.

Even though they went to states last 2 years.

I live in Jackson County, Illinois, which is on your list of "poorest" county per state. It's commonly known that Pope County, Illinois holds that distinction for Illinois. I'm skeptical of a list that has a picture titled "Murphysboro Post Office", when that building has not been a post office for possibly 50 years. Not saying that there aren't poor people in Jackson county (me being one of them).

Shannon county SD is almost all Indian reservation land and there is nothing for them to do no jobs. Its a good view of what well fair does to people
thanks to US government going back to the end of the Indian Wars

Gee, I always thought it was either Vinton or Meigs county that was poorest. Maybe the Athens County Shereff ripped them so bad when he got in trouble LOL. Keith

Using only income is deceptive and has little bearing on the quality of life of the residents.
Living where incomes are low usually means having low taxes, cheap real estate, lots of gardens, fish and game to live off of etc.High income areas usually have taxes and everything else priced thru the roof so just to live you need to make a lot of money.Plus these days lots of Federal and state $$$ to put a 'floor' under poor people. Not much stress living on food stamps, rent subsidies, medicaid and the like.

Some of those poorest counites had fairly high median incomes. I had to laugh at Philadelphia County ,Pa . The city of Philadelphia is the poorest part of Pa.
