Replacing Pivot Rod on Monroe Seat

Has anyone had the opportunity to replace the pivot rod on one of these seats? I just tried to install a replacement on my 8N and I cannot get the rod/rubber bushings to fit between the mounting bracket. Are the washers and rubber bushings supposed to be "pressed" into place?

Been there done that.

I got an old monroe seat and put it on my Jubilee. I removed the OEM rod. Replaced it with a 1/2 bolt. The oem bolt was 5/8 inch at one end and 1/2 at the other. So I used a 1/2x5/8 brass bushing, cut it down to fill in the 5/8 inch hole. Then I used small roller bearing 1/2 inch ID. I think the bearings may have come from riding mower front wheels, not sure, was on my shelf. About 1/2 of the bearing fit the flanged place on each end. I filled the space between bearing and the seat bracket with washers which you can see on pic. Tightened it up nicely.

If you don't want to go through all that work. You may try to center the old bold, fill the space with great stuff. Bet when it hardens it will work.

I had rubber bushings I used on the shock.

Nice tractor and nice workaround on the bolt! My workaround was two 20p nails wedged and driven in the gaps from both ends back toward the center of the tube..LOL! Made it fit tight, though. Unfortunately I might be stuck with the $20 pivot bolt as it has been scuffed up a bit in the attempt. The original rubber bushings were long gone and the stop washers all but disintegrated. Even the bolt itself was well on its way to rusting in two, so I'm not sure what it looked like when it was together. On the replacement, the bolt is shouldered on the both ends about an inch then thicker in the middle. The washers may be fitting to tight inside and not bottoming out on the shoulder, the rubber bushings may be to big or a combination of both which is preventing it from fitting between the ends of the bracket.

My pivot bolt was in such bad shape I decided to use a 1/2 bolt, which I already had. I could have taken a 5/8 inch bolt and turned it down on lath, but the 5/8 bushing 1/2 inch bolt was a quick easy fix.

I also had to move the front mounting holes back about 1/2 for the seat to adapt to Jubilee. That was an easy fix too. Did a little cutting with cut off blade, bolted it up, tack welded it in place. Removed from tractor, then gave it 2 good welds.

I'me very happy with the ride. Not as good as the monroe seat on my Farmall C. But many times better than the old ford seat.

Mine was all shot. I welded thick washers with a 1/2 inch hole on either end of the tube. Then I drilled the side holes for a 1/2 inch long bolt. I ran a bolt all of the way through. It is not supported in the middle, but is on both ends. It takes pivot force not down force - it will last as long as I need it to. I'm not a very heavy guy either.

I was shocked the first time I sat down without a foot of slop to the left and right. It felt reassuring!
