Hello
I have a 861 ford powermaster that has a lot of blowby wondering what is the best additive to use without rebuilding?

Thanks for your time.

I haven't experienced this myself, but if the tractor has sat for an extended time without running, it is possible that the blowby could be caused by stuck rings. Some have told of breaking them loose by applying ATF through the plug holes, then allowing it to work for 2-3 days, then working it hard for a few hours or until success is noted.

Yep,no 'magic potion' to clear up blowby. As was said,if it has sat and is gummed/stuck rings, work the crap out of it for a day,get it really WARMed up.If that doesnt work or you just cant live with with it,OH.if its high hour and uses oil, then it its overhaul time.

Ahhh.... the old "mechanic in a can" syndrome. No magic potion will put back missing material. If the rings are worn to the point of excessive blow by, then the only fix is a ring job. If the rings are stuck, hard usage might loosen them up some. But, if the rings are both worn and have lost their tension, a ring job is the only fix. Sorry.

A cylinder hone and a cheap set of cast iron rings. Best done in a dark shop so you won't see all the other problems! LOL

my recommendation is

Change to a hd 15w-40 motor oil.. It will have additives to clean the rings, and lower blowby. If the tractor improves after a bit, keep changing the oil every 300 hours.

Best place to get it.. wally world or any parts store or truck stop.

chevron delo, mobile delvac, Shell rotella, mystic, and others are examples of hd diesel oils.

Other wise from the old days when I was young and dumb.. pour one QUART of stp oil treatment in with 3 quarts of hd oil. STP was originally made by the studebaker packard company to help reduce blowby.. its a temporary patch at best,, But I limped along for years using it.. I would pulling to a filling station and fill the oil and check the gas. But that was the high school days when I changed engines almost yearly. Always bigger and faster, always racing the crap out of old iron.

If you think it is stuck rings I would try some Sea Foam before I tear it down. If it works its cheaper than an over haul if it doesn't your not out that much.

What is the history of that tractor?? Has it sat a long time with out running etc. You might try putting a qt. of ATF in 3 or so gal of gas and run it that way. If it is from sticking rings or carbon the ATF will help. By the way there is no magic snake oil that will fix an old tired engine

Cast iron rings will seat faster, but the chrome rings will last long after the cast iron ones are totally worn out - and with the right honing pattern, the chrome rings will seat almost as quickly as the cast iron ones.
