Exhaust Fluid for F250

A couple of days ago, when it was in the near 0 temp range, the message came up on my dash of my 2011 F250 diesel that my exhaust fluid was low and I have 780 odd miles to go. I had only driven it about 5 miles that day delivering 2 round bales of hay. I started to put a can (2 1/2 gal.) in and before the whole can was in it overflowed at about 2 gal. and the notice is still on the dash. I haven't been running the truck much at all this winter, we've been taking the wife's car most times. I'm just wondering if the fill tube might have gotten ice in it and won't let the exhaust fluid go into the tank. Anybody got any thoughts on this. Keith

just Froze. The suction line has a heater on it . This will allow it to run normal but the computer is reading froze. All is good to run it like this just the computer is reading froze. I have had the same thing and the Folk that know ( Dealer ) told me this. Stuff you truck in a heated area (like I did ) and it all good. Till its cold out again.

Bob, exhaust fluid is a urea based liquid that some newer diesels use in the exhaust system instead of having a EGR valve. It helps the particulate filter keep clean in the exhaust.

This fluid can freeze when the temperatures get under 0-10 degrees F.

Geez, I just thought exhaust fluid was to lubricate the muffler bearing. Learn something new every day on this forum.

Thanks for the responses. I was pretty much sure that's what was wrong with it since I haven't been driving it much at all this winter and none during this cold spell till I had to move some hay. It can just sit there till I need it LOL. Thanks again guys for the replies. Keith

My neighbor has a nice Big Case IH 4 wheel drive tractor. I don't remember the # on tractor. Only guessing, it might be a 235. It's big, it's bright red, it has no black exhaust what so ever. So why is this tractor burning so cleanly? DEF? Computerized fuel injectors?

last summer I happened to back in beside a truck with the new system and noticed that the inside of the pipe was white.

In my mind, the system should have some way of knowing the fluid is likely frozen and shut the system down. I know the GM trucks are supposed to do that because they had software issues when the '11s came out with DEF that did not do that correctly and idled the engine prematurely. GM trucks also have heaters to delay the freeze.
