F450 truck 1990 model

Need some help I recently bought a F450 1990 year with 4 wheel drive , am having trouble shifting the 4wheel drive, on top of the shift handle it says 4Lo N 2HI 4HI can anyone tell me how to shift this truck? forgot to say it is an auto trans

I'd think you could do it sitting still in any gear as long as there isn't pressure against it. If you try in neutral with it running,it'll probably grind something awful going from low to high. My 85 is a standard transmission, but I had a 77 Chevy 4x4 with an auto and it didn't matter if the truck was even running or not to shift that one.

Let me amend that a little to put it in neutral to go from low to high or the other way. If it's in gear it'll probably grind. But 2 high to 4 high,as long as you aren't spinning the tires at the time,it should go right in and out.

comnon for shift linkage to be bound up if not used often dont force as bracket will break please do not ask how i gained this knowledge!!

when going from 2H to 4H I was usually under 35-40 mph. Just pull her back. Does it have manual or auto hubs? Have had times when auto didn't lock in, had to stop and do it manually. Stop truck before shifting from 2H to 2L.

Ken,

I don't have any experience with an F450 in any way. However, my son owns an F250, four-by-four with automatic transmission.

Engaging or disengaging the four wheel drive, in addition to changing from low range to high range, is all accomplished while stopped with the transmission in neutral.

While stopped, and in neutral, the changes work quickly and effectively. If the truck is moving or is in any gear other than neutral, the changes do not do anything.

Good luck.

I have 240K on my Truck now!

I had posted just a few days ago about my 07 F250 with the electric switch. I couldn't get that one out of 4 low. Had to put it in neutral with my foot on the brake.
The wife hadn't been able to get her 02 Explorer Sport Trac in 4 high or low for probably five or six years. I tried that trick on that today and finally got it in. I had to let it roll just slightly in neutral until I heard a slight clunk. Works fine now. I fixed two of them by just reading one manual. LOL

I want to thank you Randy for teaching me how to get 4 low to work in my '03 Ranger. It never engaged, and I assumed it didn't work until I read your post about the F-150. Tried it out and surprise surprise, I now have 4 low.
Thanks again you are a great teacher.
