IH trans leak

Hi all, I have a 1967 IH 424 that is leaking trans fluid. the plate on the bottom is the problem. (poor design it looks like) I have new gasket material and plan to replace it, but am not sure how much fluid I will be dealing with. My book says either 3 gallons or 17 if I have a front mounted pump. This tractor has power steering and is plumbed to run (slowly) a three point splitter. is the PS pump what they mean? I would like to catch and reuse as much of the fluid as I can, but want to be ready for the amount. Thanks for any help

I think your problem is the transmission input shaft seal.Not the plate which I believe is just a 'dust cover' over the clutch houseing.This is just a 'feeling' more than experience.So I could be wrong! LOL
 
I am with Delta Red on this one. IF you leak is the front plate you should not get any fluid. That back plate where the drain is access the fluid. The front plate is only a cover for what is supposed to be a dry housing. You have a transmission seal out. IF you were to seal your flat plate next thing you will have is a slipping clutch because oil on the clutch. Just my thinking have not been there.
 
My 340 utility does the same - leaks at the engine/transmission connection. But the leak is small enough that it outweighs the time and effort to split the tractor. I'll leave mine unless it gets a lot worse. Currently, it takes about a pint every few months to top it off.
 
OK so the front flat plate is just a dry cover. It was leaking a lot, so a seal up in there is letting trans fluid into that area. I don't have the front pump and have probably been way over filling the tranny. Could that cause the seal to fail?
Blowing about 25 mph here now with stronger gusts, snow coming in sideways. I will wait a bit to crawl back under this thing.
