What's For Supper

(quoted from post at 13:42:01 01/05/15) I'm still eating potatoes and sweet corn stored away from the farm garden. How about you?

We still have potatoes, beets, onions and winter squash in the garage, carrots in the ground, pickles and tomatoes canned, corn, green beans, peppers and pumpkin in the freezer....we eat good, but cheap!

Just finnished eatin'.

Southern fried chicken breast (Cornish X Rock), mashed taters (Kinnebeck) and green beans (white half runner). Everything raised and processed on my place.

yum

Wife is throwing her famous chili together with white beans, black beans, Brooks hot chili beans, some of my home grown home made tomato, green pepper, onion canned mix. MMMMMMM! Plus some ground beef.

Well as for me, I've created a pot of canned
venison been simmering for a couple hours in a
dutch oven with a little be of everything
thrown in there should be a dark brown thick
gravy be for long & my wife has made a bunch of
homemade noodles, with some sweet corn, home
made bread & apple sauce we canned..

I think??? I said I think there is a piece or
two of apple pie left........

We had to buy another smaller freezer to hold all of the garden produce it all so we will be eating green vegies out of the freezers until the new crop is ready next summer. Marilyn said we are down to two bags of frozen 2013 corn and I didn't plant any last summer so when that runs out we'll have to buy corn. The potato supply is down to 20 pounds so we'll be buying spuds in a couple of months. We can get all the pork we want from neighbors just for the processing fee but neither Marilyn or I can handle pork well so we have to turn them down most of the time. I sure do wish we could get some beef that way!

It's all good,
and really tastes good this time of year!
Can't wait to get the tractor out of the barn and do again in the spring.

Just noticed the Hubbard squash we have in the woodshed is starting to get white spots- so will bake it all up tonight, and freeze the pieces. Have a couple of bags of beets in the freezer, already ate all the beans and carrots. We (and our kids) eat all the corn and snap peas fresh.

Guess I need to expand the garden a little, if I'm going to get serious about putting up a supply for the winter, after I retire. With both of us still working, seems like we have more money than time, and its just so much easier to buy canned and frozen stuff when its on sale.

My taters are gone but still have a lot of sweet corn. This was my first year with taters and they turned out good. Red skins. I have already made plans to plant three times what I did.

had some deer steaks, cooked with frozen plum tomatoes and peppers from the garden. We still have plenty of white taters, but the sweet taters are gone,I Must plant more next season, the wife and daughter like sweet taters.

We had ham last night. The wife is not going to be home for dinner tonight so I made scalloped potatoes to go with the ham. She hates onions

I hit upon a good chili recipe last fall but it called for white/ yellow sweet corn from the garden. Anything I have tried as a substitute for the garden corn does not have the same effect for natural sweetness. I'll make chili this winter but it just will not be the same.

I am hoping to kick the garden up a gear for 2015. I don't know if it will happen this year but I want to add a piece of gardening equipment per year for the next few years. I have been scouting tillers on Craigslist as of late. I just can't hoe the garden like I used to.

We still have taters, pumpkin, butternut squash, carrots, sweet corn, green beans, onions, pickled peppers, cucumber pickles, apple sauce, and field corn for corn meal.

Got a lot of corn and beans but I had one of them potato famines' this year, we took a little 3 day vacation and returned to the worst potato bug take over I've seen, sprayed em, dusted them, couldn't slow em down. I think they took all the goodstuff out the spray and dust, can't think of the name now, used it for years but it don't work any more.

Venison goulash, hot rolls from the ove, lots of butter and peanut butter on them, Fresh whole pineapple. And a glass (or two ) of Argentine Malbec.

Made daughter and I chicken provolone with home made sauce:) it came out good. Sorry pics are sideways! Lol

I work for a farm that raises seed potatoes. They have around 30 different varieties. I spend the winter sampling them. Good food. Had fresh caught perch and walleye from ice fishing yesterday and fried bake potatoes, and steamed veggies.
M M Good
