I was in 2 wheel when it happened. Should be lying in the bottom of the case, I'm a thinkin, as I didn't see any signs of oil.

WHY would the chain snap in 2WD, as it wouldn't have been in motion/under load because of the transfer case being unlocked AND the right front wheel disconnect SHOULD have been disconnected as well???

Yeah but at least that fits in your garage. Never fooled with one of those newer ones, 88 and up, but it did last a long time if that was the original, so I guess them fancy engineers did ok. I too liked the NP 205 and others similar with gears, when I first saw those '88 models on the lot, and then on the lift at the GMC dealer next to the lumber yard where I worked, and what changed, like a lever to vacuum to engage etc. I lived in the past, with the '73-87 series trucks, sure they rode hard, but the bodies would rust off before the drive train failed, I used to line up and push over 4" birch and poplar trees with my '80 using the snow plow frame, amazing what they put up with.

One heck of a noise from the middle of the truck. At first I thought that a large chunk of ice had broke loose from under the truck.

Then I found out that I have no 4x4.

It's either that chain or one of the front axles has broken a keeper and pushed out. Dunno, too cold to mess with it.

Only 27 years? What the heck? Not too bad. A new chain and some other small parts and it will out last the truck.

allan when you have it apart check the oil pump very carefully inthe transfer case, those are prone to failure, i had the same thing happen on a '89 1 ton ford, in 2wd running down the hiway had a local shop "rebuild" it, it lasted 2 weeks and failed again they told me it was because it was a farm truck and i was abusing it, [ i wasnt even using it] i took it to another town and had a place that build rock crawlers and high performance off road rigs get at it, they told me the oil pump caused both failures and they had the parts to not only fix it but make sure it didnt happen again, it didnt, for the rest of the years i had the truck

I had an 89 f-250, replaced chain twice in 315k miles, but it got used hard year around. only other work I did on it was replace starter at about 200k. I still see it running around occasionally.

A friend of my son's just had a CV joint come apart on the front driveshaft of his 2012 F-250.
Made an awful mess - took out the driveshaft, transfer case and transmission.
I said you would think he would have felt some vibration before it came apart - he said, he did, but he was in a hurry, so he didn't stop to check.
