crack in farmall f30 block

I am restoring a 1937 Farmall F30 and was removing the block studs with a little heat and ended up cracking the block. It cracked between a stud hole and the piston sleeve landing. It is a very small crack but a crack none the less. It this something I should be to concerned about since it is at the top of the block and these old tractors have little or no coolant pressure?

I'm like you. I wouldn't get too excited about it. If it's like you say just smear some soft Permatex in the crack when you put the head back on. I don't know why you were removing the studs but I learned long ago from an old mechanic to not go messing with things that did not absolutely need to be messed with. I would catch heck for disconnecting a battery because likely the farmer had been hammering on the connections before and one little nudge and oops. Then you have to buy the customer a new battery or else he is mad because "It was working when I brought it in"

I had a few bad studs and an area that looked like it might need planing to true the block back up. Since I have to replace the sleeves I figured I might as well do it.

If you have all the studs out and the block out of the unit, take it to an automtive machine shop and have a stitch weld put between the stud hole and the liner bore. I had this done on a Case VAC block that was cracked between all the liner bores, what I don't remember is,if I had the deck resurficed. The liners fit the bores without any problem.

I usually just use a propane torch on F-series blocks , as it usually doesn't take a lot of heat to free things up , and as you found out , too much heat too fast and crack . Those studs are probably the hardest thing to get out without breaking them , but they drill easy if you don't harden with heat and oil first . As for the small crack you have , if it were me I would just leave it alone , maybe a little extra sealer there like Cowman said.

I had a small crack between two cylinders of my F 20 block. Some said it would never work and others said to put a sealant over it and not worry about it. I got coolant in my oil. If you have it repaired, you should not have to worry about it. If money is tight take a chance. I put K-Seal in it and I am not going to tear in to it again.
