What would a 5100 be like for soybeans? Are they much different than a 6100? How are the parts availability? This one is a 12row- 30inch with no fertilizer. Just wondering?.....Ron

Dad ran one for several years. Mostly for corn, but ran a few beans with it. Great machine. I don't think there was much difference between it and a 6100. He bought 8000 series units through parts and hung them on his 5100 bar a couple years ago. Off hand I can't remember what the difference was, but I think the 8000 is a better no-till unit.

I now run a 5100. They are a great planter. Not sure on the 12 row but on smaller ones like mine parts are no problem. Clutches and other wear parts are still being used on new planters. The seed discs are even the same. The single closing wheels are not the best in wet ground, if possible try to adapt the dual closing wheels used on modern planters if you want to ensure a closed seed trench.

They do a great job. I use a 4 row, and parts are easily available online and at the dealer. They produce a great stand, both for corn and beans, which I do. I plan to go to 6 or 8 row soon, and will be getting another 5100 because they are so simple and in some cases put down just as good of a stand as new equipment.

The 6100 and later were built a little heavier........5100 units are limited to frame mount no-till coulters and row cleaners whereas the 6100 and later were strong enough to use row unit mounted attachments. Early 5l00 used a smaller seed disc and also a smaller diameter opener disk.
