question about coons......

With raccoons......does rabbies eventually kill them? We are now using round bales out of our bank barn, and have found two dead coons, and I shot one that was acting bat sh!t crazy. Dad just called and said he has another he found acting real weird. Wont run or move....just standing out in the open. The one I shot was rolling and twisting around.

Im not upset at the declining population, but concerned about them possibly getting our cattle sick or something.

Any ideas as to what is going on?

Yes, they will die soon if they are rabid. They are still dangerous to humans and livestock in the meantime, however. I am not sure if there is still a risk after they are dead.

I have always thrown anything I thought was rabid in the trash burner. I don't know if anything can "catch" it eating the carcass but I am not changing it. I'd worry about them biting the cattle if they were that close to feed and sheds. I haven't chit one around here in years - I think I have them all thinned out. Get the dogs up on their shots and take them with you feeding.

You are probably experiencing Racoons with distemper. This time of year is worst for the disease. And yes , they will act strange,be out in daytime, flopping around on the ground , move slowly, appear to be sleeping outside , a whole lot of strange behavious as the disease affects their central nervous system. I had one in my yard that I saw several mornings and I was going to shoot it , but it did die. Local vet said it was likely distemper. I am not ruling out the possibility of rabies but there are some differences in appearance and behavior with rabies. Once they are dead and their bodies have become air temp(frozen where I am) the risk of handling them is pretty much non exixtant.

At a training session I went to as an animal control officer, We were told that the bacteria that carries rabies can live up to at least 72 hours after the animal is dead.

Don't bother worrying about the Coon population..

There will be 10 for every one you think is around.

Cleaned out one average barn and got 37 Coons.

Dirtiest animals there is, too..

My granddad tough me at a young age that if I saw a coon or possum in the light of day kill it because its sick. I have never questioned what he said and have never have had any problems with them. I don't like to just kill something for fun but there are critters that I have no use for, Coons, Possums and ground hogs are open game! Bandit

go you youtube & search. You can see many coons & foxes with rabies. Watch how they act. Doesn't matter which kind of animal; they all act the same

When I was in grade school I saw a film on a rabied dog in the advanced stages. Not nice. I have attempted to send specimens to the Ag. school here for analysis but shot them all in the head and they said by doing that they couldn't perform a reliable autopsy.
