Need Idea on Inventing something to do

Usually I have a winter project that I can work on inside a heated 2 car garage or inside pole barn.

I'm out of ideas. Need help. What's your winter project?

Surfing, as in internet. I decided last winter, it was too cold to be outside so I got pretty lazy. And this summer, I did not shake it.

Right now I am building my first cello. I just completed my first acoustic guitar.

Mine is going to be making windows and repairing doors for a couple of cabooses we are working on at our local rail road museum.

George,

I don't have any heated space to work in. I wish I did.

One of the many things that I must try to do this winter is to re-pack the wheel bearings on all of my many vehicles / wagons / trailers /implements.

In reality, I won't get them all done, but I must do as many as I can.

rrlund,
I grew up on a dairy farm. Years of experience grinding feed, bedding cattle, shoveling and spreading poo.

I may be over qualified. I think I'll just stay warm and spread the poo on YT.

As cold and windy as it is,I wish I could join you all day,but I'd better get up some ambition and get back out there. I was OK doing chores, the wind didn't sting too bad,but sitting here thinking about it isn't real appealing.

From now until sugaring time, I plan on hibernating, read some of the books in my library I haven't got to yet, re-read some others, and other than hauling TMR for the kid, relax.

rrlund,
I know exactly what you are going through. Winter slows you down, frozen feet and fingers. I too hated cold air blowing on my face.

Winter chores always took a long time. I was lucky to get out of the barn by 10pm. Got up at 6 to do chores before catching the bus at 8 to go to school.

I'm glad it you an not me taking care of animals.

My dad (no longer with us) had luminous panels on the south side of a pole barn. On sunny days it got pretty decent in there without extra heat, although he had a stove in there & burned coal. Having a lot of light really helps the ambition factor. I've been thinking it would be fun to have a small shed for smaller projects that has luminous panels on one side, might also double as a greenhouse in early spring.

I always have more ideas for projects than I have time for, right now I am re-building an old 95 F-150 that I was always fond of to make a shop/parts runner truck, I am putting a 2013 short bed on it, new fenders going through the engine and drive line, fuel tanks, pumps brake lines ect. and I am working on another 60 project for the Rantual show..along with a parking lot full of tractors to repair..I have a big ol' waste oil furnace purring in the corner and plenty of room...My Brother's and me always got a little out of hand up in town when we ran out of things to do.. so Dad would rent more ground to keep us busy...

I am supposed to remodel a bathroom (that I don't want to do). I'm going to procrastinate as much as possible even though my mother told me I would go blind from doing that (or something like that). I've been building another 22 target rifle instead just to keep occupied.

George,

I have plenty to do just short on incentive . Still working but focused on the light at the end of the race or tunnel however you want to think of it. Now days getting there is no guarantee. I just want to finish the race with something left.

Some of my to do list.

Any one of them could be a project .

That old Chevy looks to be in great shape to start a project.
Around here they would be all rusted out and the glass gone.

That Ford PA rim is pretty hard to find too!

I just finished building a 6x12 shelter for my target range. In the spring I'll pull it up to the garden, cover it with plastic on 3 sides and make a green house out of it. Multipurpose building.

Bring your gun over an kill some clay pigeons. Kids love shooting clays with a revolver.

I agree with your light idea, always seem more energetic when the sun shines, just does not happen enough in Ohio. Now if I woke up to this everyday things might be easier.

Hi George Marsh,I'm new to the yt forum.I just finished working on my low hr. 656D.New paint, new clutch, updated wiring and charging system. Now its on to my mf 65,need to replace front pivot bushing. After that my jd 2240 needs tierods. Also need to finish remodeling bathroom I started last june!

Best regards,Paul

That shot of the loader lifting the white truck bed.....first glance, looks like you made a one-armed loader for the JD backhoe! Considering your 60 crawler project, it wouldn"t surprise me.

I use that old 310 for a yard tractor, it's a 3cyl. so it's a bit light on power, I was using an old 544 I liked it a lot,, I'm trying to get another one back, they are tuff old loaders.

I would make a small beefy garden tractor with a Differential cut down from a light truck, two transmissions and a solid frame. A hydraulic system made from a medium duty truck steering linkage and pump. Jim

I've often thought of telling my wife that but I know she would crease the side of my skull with some sort of kitchen implement.

Sounds like a great family pass time but this time of year my aim is upset by my chattering teeth ;-)

That looks like it's got potential. I had a Corvette for 12 years, after 2nd kid didn't drive it much and sold it for 2 grand more than I paid for it. Shortly after, wife was listening to swap & sell on the radio and phoned me at work with number for a 58 Corvette (needs work) in case I was interested. Frame was setting in a garage all done with some hi powered new small block on it , trans. and rear axle. body was on a hayrack, and parts from 2 other cars on a 3rd hayrack. I priced a new conv. top and declined. I sold a perfectly good go anywhere Corvette for exactly what this guy wanted.
Last fall I see a guy moved in about 5 miles down the road that's got a yard full of old cars, one of which looks like a late 50's Vett body on a frame. I thought about stopping a couple times for a retirement project but so far I just slap myself and keep driving.

You have any wood working tools?

I want a 1/16 scale model of my timber frame barn, made with all real mortise and tenon joints.

Gotta side with you. I have fixed everything broken and built all the brainstorming ideas I can think of and projects are getting few and far between.

Crossword puzzles help to keep Altheimer's at bay and keep your recall mentally active.

Building model airplanes keep your wobbling hands steady.

Every once in a while you have a chore but it doesn't last long enough. Was just thinking about this subject today. Geez I have 3 more months of this.

HtH,
Mark

My shooting range is about 30 ft below grade, old gravel pit. Most of our winds come out of the south, so I enclosed the south side and very easly put tarps up to block the wind on eithr side. Or put a chain on one end and move shed. It warmer when you are out of the wind. Kids and Grand kids like the shed.

I have a shop full of wood working tools. I've
made many wood projects. Biggest was an Amish
style china cabinet out ruff cut red oak. I have
jointer, planner, band saw, table saw, biscuit
cutter, 3 hp router for making tongue and grove,
dove tail jig, sanders, power miter.

My daughter likes to make wood projects out of
recycled wood. She has an idea when we begin,
then the finished project looks nothing like her
original idea. I'm somewhat burned out on wood
projects at the time, unless my kids want to
build something. Have many board feet of red oak
and popular. All which came out of logs I sent to
the sawmill.

This past summer I helped my neighbor take his MF35 apart to replace the tranny seal. Then I had to rewire it, fix the genny, and work on carb.

I just refinished a rifle stock. I have an old cider press that I need to rebuild. I've been thinking about getting an outdoor wood stove, so I need to pour a pad for that. I have an old pull-type combine that I need to get going....and the list goes on.

I've got my '67 Datsun roadster in the heated shop. I haven't had it on the road since '02. I am hoping to get all of the body repair done this winter and repaint it. Today I got the inner bracing out of the trunk lid, and got it cleaned up and rust converter on it.

Almost finished restoring JD H. 2/3 done restoring Oliver 66. Still slowly acquiring the parts to finish the total engine rebuild of my F20 NT, IH 450 rewire, tin work, cam gear and front cover resealed. These are all filler projects of our own equipment, but putting my basket case Silver King model 41 back together after a major transmission rebuild is my number one filler project. Sold out of the family 55 years ago, got it back last year (in crates) needing a total transmission rebuild, but at least its back now. Have to get it and dad's R38 SK ready for the show in Ohio in August. Reason I say filler projects is because my stuff has less priority than something that is somebody else's, its like my second job, after my real job. Other people's equipment at my place for work is 455C Ford backhoe, total engine rebuild, underway, IH 1086 needs a cam, IH 656D needs different engine installed, and a JD B brought in missing the carb, been setting 6 or 7 years, was told to make it run. Not taking anymore projects until next fall...

(quoted from post at 10:20:23 01/01/15) Wish you were here. lol

I'm getting cold just by looking at that open station tractor! brrr.

I am glad i got rid of the beef and don't have to bed or grind feed anymore, the only outside work i do in winter is feed every fifth day 20 or so bales to the buffalo.
The rest of the time i play in the heated shop :D

Was watching an episode of Magnum P.I. and Higgins had a replica
of the Bridge over the River Kwai that was in the movie of the
namesake sitting on his desk, intact.

Don't remember who did it but somebody hit it and knocked it
down. Whatta waste.
