485 IH tractor ice in transmission

I have a 485 IH tractor and it has water in the transmission . It
has been around 17 degrees all day and for the next few
days. I need to use my tractor and the loader does not work or
any hydraulics . I was thinking of trying to put a heater on it . I
have one of the heaters that run on diesel and has a fan .
Where should I point the heater at on the tractor to try and
thaw it out. As soon as I get it going and is warmer I will be
changing the fluid and filter. Thanks

I have had that happen on my Ford 841 twice. I covered it up with a tarp then used an electric heater placed under the transmission area and also added half a bottle of heet to the fluid and let it warm up. I then drained it and added new fluid. I also loosen up the drain plug so that as the ice melted it would drain out since oil floats on water

Had that happen with son's JD B this fall. Was able to get engine running, and just let it run for a while in neutral with clutch engaged. Warmed up enough to allow transmission to function. Was able to pull it inside where it sits with plug out dripping into a tub. Parked for the time being, will have to put in new lubricant in in the spring.

My FIL had an 8' piece of 12" duct pipe with a 90 degree elbow on the end to warm his JD 60 so it would start in -30F temps. he would line it up with the Knipco and elbow up under the block.

A "brooder light" (clamp fixture) with a 250w bulb (red or white makes no difference in this case), a couple inches away and facing the bottom or lower side of the rear case, preferably near the drain plug. Covering the tractor with a tarp will help keep the heat better contained. It should be able to put enough heat in the iron in a few hours to melt ice, even at 10*, without playing with fire.
