Who would have ever thought.....

.....A used car dealer that's a pathological liar. I can't imagine such a thing.

I have an '04 Dodge 2500 4wd that I wanted to sell. Listed it in a couple places but didn't expect much response this close to Christmas/New Years. Got a couple ridiculous offers, then one solid prospect. That was from a new to the area used car dealer who claimed he had a couple buyers wanting what I had to sell. He made me what I thought to be a fair, albeit not quite "retail" offer. It was still where he could sell it and expect to make $1500 to $1800 real quick.

So. We were set to meet at the bank, exchange money, and sign over the title. I showed on time. He didn't. I called and got the "I'm stuck at the doctors" excuse. Little did he know, I know where he lives. Drove past his house (In a different vehicle) and there sits his car. And there stood the dealer in his driveway. I called again, and get the "I'm still at the doctor" line. I make a deal, I keep my end of the bargain. I actually had an offer of a few hundred bucks more AFTER we made this deal. I told them I couldn't take their offer because I'd already sold it. Now I can't get ahold of that person

I know dang near everyone in this one horse town. Believe me, they'll ALL know what sort class individual we're dealing with.

Had to vent....Thanks for listening.

2 old 2 care,

Although I agree with your sentiment, I think that you would be very wise to be very careful about how you phrased the facts of your interchange with the guy.

In the immortal words of Joe Friday, "Just the facts". I don't think that it would be wise to speculate as to the guy's intentions, his past dealings, or the probability of his doing unprofessional things in the future.

Be careful and factual about what was said and done by both you and the other guy.

My outlook.........If he told me he was in a Dr's office, and was in his driveway, I would have found out what kind of man he is right then.
That would be all I need to know about him, I'd be finished with him for good, no more dealings, or interaction at all.
He could have told you the truth [whatever it was] at least as easy,if not easier than a outright lie.
As I opened with that is my outlook.

Liars, Cheaters & Theives are all the same. Just in different forms.
My Grandmother use to say. "Liars Steal". Another one of her sayings was "Those who don't trust are not to be trusted".

You are not alone, sooner or later most everyone has gone through something like that. Until a buyer puts down some money to hold the deal for a defined length of time, I don't consider an item sold. The first person to put the right amount of money in my hand buys it. "Money talks, BS walks".

Re-list it for sale, and move on.

2 Old 2 Care- When you drove by his house in another car and saw him standing in his driveway. I would have stopped at the end of the driveway while he was 'feeding' you his BS. And just looked at him while he was still on the phone with you.

I'd chalk it up to experience and move on.

Slandering the guy will say just as much about you as it does about him.

I had a guy come to buy 18" aluminum car wheels I had for sale on CL a few days before Thanksgiving. He seemed to like what he saw but couldn't pick them up in the Lexus he was driving and needed to come back in his truck after Thanksgiving. I said ok, but I didn't hold things for people unless they left a deposit. He said sure and opened his wallet and only had $10 on him. I said that was fine. The Monday after Thanksgiving he emailed me to say he decided he didn't want them as they were over-priced and not in good condition. ??????? Ok I replied. Nothing was said about the deposit and I kept it. I deserve the $10 for my trouble dealing with him.

I deal with folks like that every day of my life.

Any reason you would expect YOUR world to be free of such "blems"?

One virtue I have tried to instill in my sons, more than any other, is to keep their word, and to be true to their word, thereby respecting our family name.

Sadly, not everyone thinks that way!
