Great article! I have a Yanmar YM2000 Diesel - LOVE IT!! but I can't figure out if it has a glow plug or not - it has the "glow plug" position on the switch! It runs AWESOME!! Also, how would I find out how old it is - the number on the side says ym2000-04811 Thanks - Gary

Not glow plugs by the traditional meaning of the term. But word-meanings keep changing over time. Indirect injected diesels use "glow plugs" in the precombustion chambers and won't start without them. Direct-injected diesels like your Yamnar do not have those. Many people are calling electric air-heaters or Thermostarts in the air-inakes "glow plugs." Air heater is usually an electric coil that heats incoming air in the intake manifold in DI diesels. Versions of "Thermostart" use the same with the addition of adding diesel fuel to the "fire." Some have their own little fuel reservoir and some are just hooked to the main fuel tank. I know Yanmar, Ford, and SAME use Thermostrarts with fuel. DI diesels start fine without using the electric heater during mild temps (unlike a IDI with glow plugs). The position on our key-switch is likely for cold-weather starting.
