There has been discussion in the past aboot people that can't spell.
Did any one notice that the people who write nursery rhymes for children can't spell mucha better. Such as Old McDonald didn't spell farm correctly and santa claws spelt mary Christmas HO HO HO.

I don't mind misspelled words as long as I can understand what someone is saying or asking.
That being said, I have always been bad at spelling. When I can look at the news paper and notice spelling errors?? That is real bad.

I had a guy tell me I was "less of a person" than he was because my spelling was bad. I told him I am working on my spelling every day but he isn't working on not being so fat. He is about 400lbs of fat. It sure is funny he always comes to me for help on other things though like when his check engine light is on, or when something needs to be built at work.

Being married to a lady who taught school for thirty years I quite regularly get reprimanded for spelling, grammar and punctuation errors. Someday I just might graduate from elementary school if I just do as I am told and listen carefully.

What I do not like is when my iPad or iPhone will change my spelling and I do not notice. Usually it puts in a word that really does not fit the discussion .

I think 6 years of rural country school with only 6 kids made a big difference in learning grammar and spelling. Sadly, my twin sister and I are the only two of those students remaining.

There is some kind of demostration that has a lot of badly mispelled words in it. One can get the meaning of what the message is very easily with all the errors. It is also a fact, men are worse at spelling than females.

It's been my experience that good spellers are lousy at math. Personally if I had to choose, I'd rather be able to add my money than spell monetary funds :D

About the only time that I want things spelled right is when someone is writing my name on a check - but then, I really prefer the cash.

This isn't a grammar board, it's a board for lovers of old tin. I feel as long as I can understand what the poster is trying to convey, my correcting his/her spelling would be arrogant on my part.

Brings to mind something I was thinking about last week. I went to a rural one room school for the first six grades. There were several other rural schools in the district and we used to have spelling bee competitions working up to a major championship at the end of the year. I won them all till the last one of the sixth grade which I kind of threw. The competition had started at eight in the morning and was down to the last word sometime around four in the afternoon. I was a word or two ahead of another little girl. The lady that was giving the words was for some reason wanting the little girl to win. Time came for the last word and the lady was getting real anxious. "OK, the last word is the abbreviation of -avenue-." Unknown to her, I had come across that very thing that morning when I had thumbed thru the dictionary before we started. Sure win! "The abbreviation of -avenue- = ave." The lady couldn't control herself and started jumping up and down. "WRONG! You got it wrong, it is supposed to be capitol Ave!" I looked at her and said, "NO, I didn't, that is what is in the dictionary." Long story short, she and a few other ladies went in the back and had a long discussion. They finally came and got me and took me in a back room. Well, the lady apologized and ask me, since I had won for so many years if I would mind saying I had spelled ave. wrong, so the little girl could win. I made them sweat for a few minutes before I said "OK". All I ever got was a handmade blue ribbon for winning so it didn't make much difference. Got a red ribbon for the last one. It made me feel good to let her 'win' anyhow. Wonder if she still remembers it? Probably not.

Hey retired,
I went the first 5 grades to a one-room schoolhouse.
I am convinced that one learns a lot more peripherally than one realizes at the time.
When I went to the "central" school, I tied with one girl for the title of best speller in 6th grade. She went on to be our valedictorian while I just "skinned through. LOL
I don't know about you but I am not the speller I was then and I find myself checking myself all the time. I even checked both of the "big" words in this post and surprisingly I had spelled them both correctly.
I do use "spell-check" as well.
