Saving The Mercury

A little off topic as it concerns rescuing a vintage car but I did use a vintage tractor to haul the car out of the woods. 1964 Super 90 Massey. Here is some video of it. Got a long way to go before this one moves under it's own power.

The main thing is, you have it! It is safe in your hands, and you can take your time working on it. Those bumpers must have been made of stainless steel, or they had some of the best chrome anyone ever saw. I have a frame from under a 56 Ford and the rear bumper is still in great shape and it has been laying out in the weather for forty years.

Seems like I heard one time that high-quality chrome plate consists of copper plate, then nickle plate, and only then chrome plate. Expensive.

Bingo.

When a child I actually pealed the chrome off of the bumper on my 1947 Pontiac where it had been damaged slightly allowing rust to start in the base metal.

Beneath the bright chrome plating was copper.

The chrome plating was thick enough that you could cut yourself with it if not careful.

I have a 1981 Mercury Cougar. I was going with my wife in 1952 and I was drafted into the Army
in 1953 and we were married. I bought a 1954 Plymouth in 1953. Hal

I own several old fords and a 50 merc, you should consider
joining the early ford V8 club. If you are going to try to restore
this car. They cover the flathead era 32-53 fords and mercs
and Lincoln's.They have an excellent club magazine with lots
of information on these cars and trucks. They have a website.

(quoted from post at 01:29:56 12/11/14) I have never been able to figure out why all old cars are always missing at least one headlight ring.
2 of my International trucks also had damaged headlight rings.
But I know exactly how this 52 Merc was damaged. My dad had parked the car outside the local Ford shop. Parallel parking in that part of town. After he was finished in there and came out he found the hood dented and the headlight ring broken. He recalled seeing a truck load of lumber parked nearby and figured the guy backed up pushing a post or 2x6 into the Merc.
Yes, that chrome is pretty decent although the rear bumper is not so bright. I hear it is very expensive to re-chrome. That is pretty far down on the list of priorities right now.

At least you had the Carb covered. Seems like most of the old cars we have had get the air cleaner removed. Then the rats build a nest there. They are all gone for scrap now.
