Farm Tractor Different Diesel Fuels

Do Most of You Guys/Gals use The Off road DYed or the on Road Truckers Clear Type, OR Does it really make a Difference in Farm Diesel Engines? Thanks, Larry

The fuel is the same...the difference is in the extra tax for road fuel. Taxed to pay for the roads.

That question comes up about ever month.. No difference except the color and cost. Better not get caught using the un taxed in a highway vehicle ..

Yep, green doesn't matter anywhere but not good to get caught with red in the tanks on the highway. The actual stations by me quit selling red and I can imagine why, so have to get it from a bulk supplier now.

Only convenient place that I have to buy fuel, the red is only a few cents below the taxed fuel. It is not close to being the taxed amount below the price of the taxed. They are making a killing on it. I am tempted to buy the green just so they won't make so much but, I guess that wouldn't be too smart.

It's all the same just different color and maybe different additives for on road. Iv run furnace oil home heating oil in my diesel tractors for close to 20 years never had a problem. I add a little two cycle now because of the low sulfur and use power service in the winter for anti-gel. My 4610 Ford has over 4000 hours on it never a fuel related problem. I have never touched the injector pump on it since we got the tractor in 1990. As mentioned it just dyed for tax reasons.

So they started dying kerosene so people wouldn't run it in diesel road vehicles--but now kerosene is a lot more expensive than diesel. I wish they didn't dye it.

I hear you can ask for the tax paid on road diesel used off-road be refunded you at tax time. Anyone use enough to do this?

for those that don't think they will be checked I pulled up to a crossroads in the middle of nowhere and 2 officers are checking fuel and of course they checked mine it was ok, another time we were working about a 100' from the hwy out in the country side, up pulls a ford pickup young lady shows her id and checked every vehicle with a tag no problems, she told me if we used any red additives we had better have good records back then a lot of people use atf in their diesel, a couple years later middle of nowhere again boss got caught with a road crane that had contaminated fuel in it from some that got mixed in a pickup bulk tank they started at $10,000 I think he finally weaseled out of it

#2 in summer, some #1 blended in in cold climates in winter.

The color only matters to the tax collectors, not the engine.

Here's a good one, guy I know works for a parking lot sweeping company, the engine to run the sweeper also ran of the same tank as the truck did, they were using off road fuel in the truck tank, they got a fine! Lol, what do u do in that kind of situation, on and off road truck?

All diesel fuel comes into the terminal as clear fuel. The dye is added when the trucker loads his tanker. You can also have anti-jell additive added when loading.

It seems pretty straight forward: they could have used only road diesel in the common tank; or they could have installed two completely independent tanks, one for the truck using road diesel and one for the sweeper engine using off-road diesel.

It sounds like they had a workable system, someone just messed up or didn't think they would get caught when they filled the truck with off-road diesel.

I ran 1 qt. of ATF per 100 gal back when I had a rock bucket. Wasn't enough tint to tell any difference at 400:1. I read up on the dye once and it's combustible and according to the TX. tax office the engine doesn't know it's burning it.

If you are running a legitimate farm, you can file to have the taxes refunded to you at the end of the year.
