I am working on adding capacity at this site.

The Northern Natural Gas Company operates a major underground gas storage facility near Redfield in Dallas County. The facility stores natural gas that is transported via pipelines from fields in oklahoma. The gas is stored in sandstone and limestone aquifers beneath naturally-occurring structural domes that formed along the Thurman Redfield fault zone. originally certificated in 1954, the facility encompasses approximately 12,600 acres of surface area, with natural gas stored in four stacked underground aquifer-type reservoir formations; the elgin, Galena, St. Peter, and Mt. Simon formations. The facility can store and withdraw as much as 133.75 billion cubic feet of natural gas, and has provided Iowa with a steady supply gas for energy generation, heating, and fertilizer production, even in times when the out-of-state supply was limited. Within the Redfield storage facility there are approximately 60 miles of pipeline, a compressor station with seven compressor units totaling 16,760 horsepower, and multiple injection/withdrawal and observation wells into each reservoir.

It always impressed me how they could do that. I would think the gas would leak out through the rock when under pressure. I know it does not seem to but it sure seems like an issue waiting to happen.

I think one of these type of storage systems leaked all the gas out 20 years ago or so over in Ohio or PA.

The wells vary between 2600 and 4000', it amazes me too how they can store this way. The farmers own the land and lease the storage rights.

ya, they leak. sometimes come up water wells & when the pump kicks on, the spark ignites the gas & the water well blows up. Also leak into old gas wells, giving the well owner a sudden bonanza as he sells their own gas back to them.

I remember reading a realty advertisement for a large farm in Ind. I think it was, that had one of those underground gas storage pockets under it. It sounds dangereous.

They are mapping the structures with more detail and adding wells in areas that had smaller domes. The gas rises to the top of the domes.

There is a big cavern for LP southeast of Iowa City as well. It had a fire above ground in the late 80's. It took crews about 3 weeks to put the flame out.

I talked to a guy a couple of months ago who help build it back in the 50's. He said all the dirt and rock had to be taken out the same elevator shaft that they used to go down into it.

He was on the blasting crew.

I can't even imagine working in a cavern 300+ feet below the surface.

Yes Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) has a storage area near Royal Center Indiana. No big problems , yet. joe

I grew up just miles from the main facility Northeast of Redfield, my parents still live there, no one has ever acted likes its dangerous to be around. Northern Natural Gas always let the 4-H kids use their big tow-able grill for the food 4-H booth at the county fair. Only bad thing I could say about living that close is the place is lit up light an airport at night, kinda puts a damper on star gazing to the NW.
