New battery acid low

Bought a new lead acid battery and the fluid is not up to the "split ring". Should I add more acid to get it to the proper level before installing? I have acid.

Charge it first. It will probably come up some. Even if it doesn't come all the way up, it will be OK. Better a little low than sloshing out the top, especially if it's off road, going to get bounced around.

Don't think it would really matter to add acid or distilled water. If you need to get rid of some left over acid, wouldn't hurt it.

If the electrolyte level is very low, I might consider adding battery acid, HOWEVER if it only requires a small amount to bring it to the recommended level, I would just use distilled water.

YES I have to make some general statements, but not being there and not knowing the exact levels or exactly how much additive is required, that's the best I can do sitting here in Indiana. If someone knows the exact level recommended for your battery and knows exactly where it currently is and how much additive is required, they might give better advice... more power to them if they have all that information.

I was taught to initially fill with acid. When it gets low after that, top off with distilled water.

I would get it at least close to the fill line with acid prior to charging it. Then charge for a day before installing.

(quoted from post at 10:20:58 12/08/14) charge it first and see where the level is, if it is still low then add some water.

Are you implying that the fluid level will rise during charging? I activated 100's of new batteries back in the day and don't understand the necessity to charge before adding fluid.
PS: I agree with John T on topping off with distilled H2O

Charge first and measure SG. Then figure water or acid.

I guess it all boils down as to what information one wants to heed.

Looks like an Iowa address so adding water it could very well freeze if not charged enough to mix the water with the (acid). My biggest problem over the years with new batteries and electrolyte levels was that so many over filled them and then when you charged them you had a mess. Now days, most have a better system of filling. Personally, I would not add anything but, if it is a battery that sat on a shelf already filled with electrolyte, I would add a little water and then charge . If it was a freshly filled dry battery I would add electrolyte.

Back when the batteries came dry, we added acid up to the fill ring. after they sat for a while the air bubbles came out and the plates soaked up so the level went down slightly. We refilled with acid & charged them up. If you add water it dilutes the acid & the voltage doesn't come up until it evaporates some water to get the SG up to what it should be. I never add water to a battery, only used acid from old batteries.

"new lead acid battery" ??? You paid for a battery fully filled with acid. Take the da** back and make them add acid or give you a new one.
