Have a 766D that, on a cold morning, will start OK but the hydraulic brakes and steering will not work until well warmed up. Any clues to cause and cure?

Get it good and warmed up, change the hydraulic filter. Check for water in the system. After it sets awhile you should be able to crack the drain plug and get some of the water out the bottom.

I had a 766D, but it's been gone 20 years and I kinda forget all the ins and outs.

Others on here will be more informed.

but it sounds like water forming ice or a dirty filter.

Is the tractor new to you ? If somebody Lucas oil in the hydraulic oil it will give the same symptoms

All good advise. As was said, change the hydralic filter. Then over fill by 5 gallons. Common fix for IH. Your MCV(power steering) pump is getting weak.It will have trouble lifting the oil up to the pump itself. Then there is an Oring in the pickup line that will suck air. That is between the rear end and transmission houseings. A rear split is nessesary to repair. The 5 gal over is an easy/permanant 'fix' (all my IH tractors are 5 gallon overfull)
